schuyler is correct. My point is that you can maximize the success of your team, not overuse your closer, give them the chance to only close save situations (so when you need them they are fresh and available) and win games at a very high level. Why would I force my closer into more games then he is needed? A stupid comment was made that your team (not me in particular, but in general) must suck if they don't get into that many games.

It's not based on one season. But, if that's going to be an issue, just get him in more games. You're in control of your team. Do what you need to do to win games or worry about HOF stats.

Anybody remember the Black Sox?

forget the comment about winning games instead of worrying about the HOF, i didn't mean to be commenting on that...my point was that you seem to be advocating not maximizing the IP of your best reliever (or saying it doesn't matter)...it may have been that on your team, the IP that your closer could have pitched, but didn't, were picked up by someone nearly as talented, or that the rest of your team was so good that it didn't "hurt" you to not maximize his IP...i think that this is wrongheaded thinking and just because it "worked" for you doesn't prove that it is the best/right way to go

Honestly, this falls under the same category as letting a guy rot in AAA for a couple of seasons because he's blocked at the BL level. The player may have been BL-ready at 23 but he isn't called up until he's 26. He loses three seasons and, because of that, he won't have HOF numbers.

I do that all the time for contract reasons. I also wouldn't rush a guy up if my team is not competitive yet. Once he hits the bigs that money clock starts ticking.
