I just moved up to D1 for the first time (Xavier), and now I watch every Xavier game because I want to see how my flex offense and my +2 man to man defense looks. :)
More importantly, hows your right hook?

I occassionally drink way to much water before going to bed so that I wake up to recruit every three hours. Luckily my wife is a very deep sleeper so she ususally doesn't notice, but sometimes this is the conversation:
  • [Her] Are you okay, you keep getting out of bed?
  • [Me] Just using the bathroom,...getting a drink.
  • [Her] That's like the third time tonight. Maybe you should get checked out?
  • [Me] I just drank too much before bed?
  • [Her] Why did you get another drink?
  • [Me] I was thirsty.
  • [Her] Why did you get on your computer?
  • [Me] I was just checking some scores and stuff while I finished my drink.
  • [Her] That's stupid.

The correct answer to 'why did you get on your computer?' is always, "You shouldn't  ask questions so close to your birthday/anniversary/Christmas."

After the event, when she looks disappointed in the gift, remind her, "I got a great bargain on those Wendy's coupons at E-bay. That's why I was on the computer so much...to make sure I wasn't outbid."

Great stories all. I feel (slightly) less like a complete tool now for how much time I spend on these teams.

Best story of mine: My first job was at Calvin College in Smith. One of my favorite early recruits was a guy named Herman Stiles, a PG who was an absolute assist machine. My wife overheard me talking so much about the team, and the player to our then-8-year-old son that she called Calvin College and special-ordered me for Christmas a long-sleeved Calvin t-shirt with the name "Stiles" emblazoned on the back. I still wear it proudly.

+1 for wife who gets it.

How many times has my wife heard this?  "I'll be off in 5 minutes babe"...and then my 9 year old boy says "Don't count on it Mom he's on his WhatSports site"....traitor.

I could have been a National Champion 10 times by now if it wasn't for her.  :)

Thanks to this thread, tonight I boasted to my wife that my fake Abilene Christian team was playing for the fake Lone Star Conference tournament championship.

And she actually laughed.

I think one more story, which isn't near as crazy as these others, will be my final:

I coach HS basketball part time. Well, here we are, at halftime, up 65-14, and I say nothing to my players, just let them relax. And I go into the coaches office and land my coveted "double-whammy" time (two recruiting cycles in about 10 minutes). I was then late onto the court, and a freshman was acting as interim coach.
ok - this one is my fav...

You've got to explain to the wife about alternatives.  Mine was always a little grouchy about WIS until we visited her two best friends from grad school and she listened to how their husbands were going away 2-3 weekends a month to casinos, golfing, etc.  After that visit she wasn't so concerned about me having to be on the computer from 7:45-8:15 in the evening once in a while.

I was watching my nephew's high school basketball game and his team was getting beat because their opponent was hitting a lot of 3 point shots.  I told him at halftime that he should play "+2".  He just looked up at me with a "wtf" kind of a look.

Standing outside my cubicle today listening to my boss talk about how Montana St Billings smoked St Martin last night. I said "I hear that Billings coach is awesome. Final Four last season, 12 NT bids...." My boss says "really?" and I said "umm no." I kinda forgot he wouldn't get the joke....

Not for story time but I was on a cruise through Alaska and we stopped in Skagway, Alaska which is a very small town.    I told my wife that I would be back as I need to recruit.    She knew not to ask questions as she has been through this before and I would meet up with her in an hour.   I got off the boat and asked for the closest internet cafe and the local told me the library is your best bet.   I walked over and used the public library's internet to recruit and then came back 3 hours later to finish up for the day recruiting.    The next day, I finished recruiting in Juneau, Alaska and received my two players later on.  .

How small is Skagway?   I went on a bike tour and my guide was the town's massage therapist.    She told us that everyone in the town can have three jobs in the summer but barely one in the winter time.

I work in higher ed and a couple of years back I received a letter from Maine - Presque Isle and my first, second, and third thoughts were to wonder why my conference mate was contacting me by postal mail.
That's awesome.

Back in the day I was the long time coach of Redlands in Naismith. Shortly after I left I sat next to a cute girl on a plane wearing a Redlands sweatshirt. I spent the entire flight debating whether or not to let her in on our shared Redlands connection, before wisely deciding not to.
I'm the current coach at Redlands in Naismith and about a year ago I was driving to a training course for my job which happened to be in Whittier... That same night my Redlands squad was playing Whitter for the conference tournament championship. I couldn't help but feel like I was on the team bus on the drive there thinking about my gameplanning for that night's match.

Also, since I live in L.A. I'll occasionally see a University of Redlands commercial when watching television... Can't help but feel a small sense of pride when that happens lol

I'm a big college BB fan, mostly following U. of Kansas.  Whenever we play a D2 team in exhibition, or any lower D1 team, I catch myself "scouting" those teams wondering if I would recruit the players and how they'd fare in HD.
