I think the guys battling for 5 star recruits should be involved in a blood bath.....every season, for every recruit.

With that being said, it would probably have all sorts of unintended consequences in recruit signing that have a negative impact on the game and teams ability to stockpile talent.

In fact, I think that is fine DURING recruiting as well.   A little posturing is fun in my book.
I tend to just clam up during recruiting but that's me.  I don't want to give anyone any insight into who I'm after, how much money I have or what kind of responses I'm getting.   (Of course, once they verbal it's public knowledge).

I'd rather not encourage OR discourage anyone.  Just not my style.  I prefer to fly under the radar until it's done.  Now, having said that, it's not unusual for my conference mates to engage in some harmless banter after signings start.  "Damn, I wanted that guy!" or "I was scouting that kid, he's gonna be awesome for you."

its a totally different kind of blood bath. competitive and blood bath are vastly different (and you don't need a dictionary to tell you that)! it almost guarantees, in fact id bet my life saving on it, that the kind of underhanded tactics like saying, hey, gang up on coach X, hes in a battle with me AND someone else (which is making a suggestion for an implicit agreement - battle him, and ill continue to do so - which is collusion) - would lead to blatant collusion. the next season, you think the coach who got double teamed isn't going to hit back, harder? its only going to escalate until people have built alliances and all that. theres just no other way for it to go.

No.  They'll probably just choose not to spend their money on another season.

I talk about what I am doing all the time.  As long as I do it without requesting information from others, or asking someone else to do something, I think its ok.

Like:  I really need a SG and there is a SG 50 miles from me, yay!  Or, crap there is no SG anywhere near me, I need to poach one.

Both are posturing.  I don't want anyone to be on the SG near me, and I want anyone I go after to know I really need a SG and wil be willing to spend $50,000 or whatever to get him.

But I think I am just saying what is in my head and not asking for anyone to do anything.  Is it ok or not so much?

There's a million different scenarios and it all boils down to one simple question: Are you ruining the experience of someone paying to play a game?

Bantering, posturing, celebrating - if it's all in good fun, go for it and it'll probably be appreciated by the people logging in to play the game who read the coaches corner.  But if you and/or your buddies are ganging up on a smaller school player for the sake of ganging up on somebody, that's way too much.  Common sense, really.

I think it boils down to, don't be a totally jerk.

"why is it that collusion needs to be secret "-  I believe collusion needs to be secret because that is how it is defined by dictionary.com and law.com....

That's not what the definition YOU provided said.  It said "usually secret."  I assume we all know what "usually" means.

Recruiting should really be a quiet period. I just noticed this little gem as I was going through big 6 conf to see if any team has overrecruited, potentially giving me an upgrade after the 8 pm cycle:

I don't want to come right out and make accusations here, but this looks really bad. Duke already has 7 frosh considering him, is in 4 battles, and, after begging from Miami, comes in on a Louisiana recruit at the cycle before signings?

mattlugar   Wow, I just noticed that I have a transfer I hadn't even seen come up in my searches (athleticism way too low) that is considering me... Never spent a buck on him... Guess he's a die hard Yellow Jacket fan or something.

Everybody is overly sensitive about talking during recruiting. In most conferences the quietest time is during recruiting, everybody is so scared to give away information or say something that might be considered collusion. Personally I think it's perfectly fine to say pretty much anything unless it's blatant collusion. If I'm in a battle and a guy posts on my CC "you might as well quit I still have 60k left," it's up to me to decide if he's serious or FOS. But I wouldn't say something like that because I know people will have a fit. The only thing that would actually get me upset is if guys are actually making agreements on what recruits to go after.
what about saying, hey, i already have 40K into that guy and we're even... but i have 40K left, so u should give up! that opens your opponent up for attack from other coaches, if they now have good reason to believe your opponent is deeply invested. these kinds of comments have been made and very seriously frowned upon. if that kind of tactic was allowed, it would be done rampantly for obvious reasons, and recruiting would be a veritable blood bath. i'd be ok if that was the case, but i really don't think it would make for a friendly environment at all...

Nobody makes friends during recruiting, lol. I'm pretty sure every squabble I've ever been in has been during recruiting. That's one of those comments that people wouldn't make or at least shouldn't make because it gives away information, and if it were the truth it would be silly. I know last recruiting period I almost did something similar, and then thought "what the hell am I doing?" So I waited until after the recruit signed to make that post.

Personally, the game is more fun with drama, I hate when everybody is being all friendly all the time, which is why I'm glad emy apparently hates me now, lol. Makes recruiting more fun, and his potential to go on a tirade is always awesome.

3/9/2012 8:55 PM
Aww Mason, I don't hate you, far from it actually.  I will admit, my tirades have improved lately.  Still nowhere near what Oldave used to post, but then again, there was, and is, only one Oldave.

the more I think about this, the more I think statements about yourself are fine.

I have $80k left....

I'll be fighting to my last dollar for Jones....

The trouble starts when you start talking about  other people...

LSU is in trouble

Johnson you are a wimp...attack Duke's players.....

Crap like that...

Although, an occasional <insert coach name here> "you're full of ****"  should be allowed if Johnny Bragsalot is always posturing about himself with completely inaccurate information.

Saying, "I have $80K left ..." I don't see a problem with. Saying "I'll be using all of that on Jones if necessary" does create issues though. As someone pointed out earlier, that tells other teams that your opponent is likely committed in a costly battle and may be vulnerable. The LSU example above when one guy tried to coax others into going after a team's players I think is totally out of bounds.

This is completely wrong/unfair/collusive and why people do this in a game where there is no money at stake (not that stakes would make it right) is beyond me.  I like to be competitive but would never engage in this nor have i ever in the past.  Its baffling to me that a gameplayer would see this as justifiable.
