It is rare, but I have given up quality for slightly less quality/quantity to make the team better. And it worked.
Anybody who read the book "Moneyball" might remember the dilemma the Athletics faced when Jason Giambi left as a free agent. There was no way they were going to be able to replace him with a comparable player, because there really wasn't a comparable player available. But the A's looked at replacing the composite of Giambi, Johnny Damon and one other player (I forget who it was) with three other players whose composite production projected to be similar to that of Giambi, Damon and the third guy.
No reason why that same approach can't be used in HBD with respect to trades.
