Yes it happens often. Just don't use the redshirt recruiting tool. It's not that bad to have a guy on your roster that needs development anyways. I start guys like that. It's not a huge deal. And also I'd keep trying to redshirt him each season. He'll probably take it at some point. (And if it's later, like Soph or Jr year, the extra WE built up will help the redshirt year growth)
This is horrible advice from the first word to the last.

I've found if you have depth at the position of a player you want to redshirt he will usually accept it if he's the worst of the players in that depth chart. I don't think I've ever had a player turn down a redshirt if he was the 3rd best at his position on the team.
My experience too. I'm currently redshirting a soph who's the third best PG on my team. I RS sophs fairly often... never upperclassmen though.

I'll be testing this theory again this weekend as possibly the most exciting recruit I've ever signed will be 3rd on the depth chart at SG. If I can get him to redshirt... by the time he's a Soph, he'll possibly be the best player on my team and 2nd best at least. His ratings are very similar to a guy who I had who was my best D3 player since I returned to HD in May and runner up NPOTY.

Ath - 46 (blue)
Spd - 51 (yellow)
Reb - 18 (green)
Def - 47 (blue)
Blk - 11 (black)
LP - 39 (black)
Per - 62 (green)
BH - 47 (yellow)
Pass - 27 (green)
WE - 70
Sta - 56 (green)
Dur - 50 (black)
FT - B- (red)

If his PER gets to 95 (he's guaranteed 90) he will be an absolute beast in D3. So I'm hoping I can get him to Redshirt his Freshman year.

Think what you want.

"its not that bad to have a guy on your roster that needs development anyways. I start guys like that. It's not a huge deal"....... and why is that bad advice? The more starts and playing time a player gets, the better he will develop. Starting a freshman is pretty common place for EVERY coach that plays at an elite level. It's just part of the game. It also moves a non freshman to your bench, strengthening your second unit. Verdict..... fair advice, maybe above average advice.

"also keep trying to redshirt him each season. He'll probably take it at some point. (And if it's later, like Soph or Jr year, the extra WE built up will help the redshirt year growth)"...... and why is that bad advice? During a redshirt season, are you going to get more growth from a 20 WE guy or a 40 WE guy? 40 obviously. I've redshirted more soph, jr, and sr in my career than I have freshman. That's "mainly" due to promises. But it's still a true statement. You get more bang for your buck. Verdict..... top notch advice. Not even in there realm of being bad advice.

what are you thinking?
