Thinking outside the box gets the ESPN etc's in an uproar. Just like they cannot understand that the world does not revolve around New York and Boston, they cannot understand a new idea if it is not theirs.

I have always wondered if a true tandem mode (Starter pitches 5, reliever finishes pitching 4 innings) with a couple of fill in/mop up pitchers in reserve would work. Two things though, no one has the talent to throw 4 starters every 4th day for 80 pitches and have 4 others who can throw 60-70 pitches on the same schedule, and no one will dare deal with the egos involved.

Well, in order to do that, you first have to accept loses in the 4th inning or destroy your staff for days to come

Your starter gets blown up in the 3rd. You tell him "We need you out there even if you don't have any stuff." So, in the 4th-5th, you're losing 9-1 because you didn't pull the guy in the 3rd down 5-1.

fwiw i just got swept in the playoffs by Z's team and i have no problem with him using this strategy. NOT cheating.

It's the fourth page, but...

I think as long as it doesn't overuse relief pitchers unrealistically (and maybe they've been taught Mike Marshall pitching) it is a cool idea.

I could see Billy Martin working for Charlie Finley and doing something like that.

Billy Martin is dead.

So is Charlie Finley.

In fact, I thought Arlen was dead too.

Let me play devil's advocate here. It is unethical! Same reason that you never see it done in MLB except for a few short term bizarre exceptions. No Manager makes this move to hide a bunch of LHPs behind a RHSP who pitches to one batter.

Thoughts as to why this strategy is not used in MLB?

Simple. Not only do players ego factor in but so does a players wallet. No agent would allow his client to sign with a team that does this.

Just imagine if you were in a professional position making 80K a year and your boss coming to you and telling you he figures he can have you and 2 co workers all work 15 hours a week for 20K a year. He gets 45 hours of work for 75% of the salary. Would you stay? Would other top people want to work for that company?

Agents would then say since you are using your staff this way their pay structure needs to be different and everyone needs to be paid starting pitchers money instead of middle reliver money.

As far as doing it in HBD I have no problem with it. The game allows it so hats off to people who are willing to put in the time to micro-manage their staff.

MikeT, if you use one of the mop-up guys on the day when your tandem is outta whack, you don't burn the entire staff.

I agree with this. But it doesn't explain why it is never done...in the playoffs for instance.

You will not see it in the playoffs. Simply because, why would a manager make a drastic change from what worked to make the team successful to something unproven in an importnat game?

I can see it happening if a team was desimated (sp?) with injuries to their starting pitching and did not have enough arms capable of starting on their 40-man roster.
