Oh really? I wasn't aware of that...

It's possible that the catcher's durability only allows him to play 50% of the time.

I'd like to see this C if I could. Then we can make better judgments on the case.

Maybe it's this guy? Kevin Holmes. I think it is. I wouldn't demote him now that he's at the ML level. I'd platoon him with Daryl Easley. I'd give Holmes some extra games though, since there are more RHP than LHP out there, and playing just against LHP might not give him enough playing time.

I know people have gone with a draft and IFA signing strategy to load their minors with SSs.

I wonder if they've tracked development by position (because, obviously, not all of those SSs will play SS). You're going to get noise based on the level they were at, the coaches they've had, but it would be interesting to see data on a team developed that way.

I posted a couple of them in this thread.

Yea, saw that. It's a one off.

I mean, there are probably teams long term with multiple SSs playing multiple positions over multiple seasons. Get a few of those, and you have a larger sample size.

Of course, I'm not going to do it, because I'm a lazy slob.

It is Holmes, and I'm going to follow your advice. Thanks.

Q - Is a player's defensive improvement dictated by his position? For example, will a player who projects 95s across the board defensively improve faster (or come closer to his projections) playing shortstop than he would if he played field? It seems there is a ceiling on improvement of certain ratings at certain positions. (examinerebb - Hall of Famer - 4:43 PM)

A - The skill and rate at which a player can improve is tied to the position he's playing. A projected SS will take longer to reach his peak fielding ability if he's playing 1B everyday as opposed to SS everyday. In fact, if you stick him at 1B he may never come close to his peak.
It's amazing that I can recall a dev chat from 30 months ago, but I can't remember what my wife told me this morning....

Selective memory... it's a wonderful thing.

He was blowing everyone out in AAA; I promoted him to ML, where he is playing about 50% of the time. Am I better off to demote him to AAA, or let him stay in ML?
You might want to get him into more than 50% of the games, or else you might hurt his development. If you demote him, you get hit with a demotion penalty (depending on the patience/makeup of the player). If you want to safely demote a player, wait for a player to come off the DL, and demote with the same move as activating from the DL. Make sure there is space on your AAA team, or else it's for nothing.

I believe the catcher would have to have been called up in the same transaction as the person going on the DL, in order for that to assure no risk of a demotion penalty.
That's what Admin says, anyway: "To prevent a demotion penalty, a player has to be promoted at the same time a player is placed on the DL and then demoted at the same time the player is removed from the DL."
