NCIH $52 MIllion Draft: Pre-Mid Season Thoughts. Topic

imo that's the wrong Pierce... It's still a great player season, but the 225 3pm/3300 minute version is superior to my mind.  Similar efg%, yet way more threes (which gets an unnatural boost for some reason) and still has some gusto to get to the line.  I agree that you're going to be slightly board-light.  Wilt+Parish are the stuff dreams are made of, though.  I also love your PG rotation.  Miller is a stud as long as he's being used as a 2.  Don't like him at the 3.

Thanks ash. I was very tempted to take Mel Daniels instead of Parish for more board power. I also took a really hard look at Swen Nater but that 20 defense rating at that position was a bit too low for my taste. Miller will hurt with his terrible defense and fairly low rebounding  for an SF in this league. Miller's in for 18 MPG at SF. After Jon Barry got snagged just before me I got desperate and was lucky to find Lawson. Pierce and Parish were steals in my mind at the bottom of round 2 and at the top of round 3. Porter going at the bottom of round 4 was also a shock to me.

I don't get why the 3's get such an unnatural boost in the SIM do you?

Round 6 evals coming over the weekend guys. Thanks for the patience. Hey tricky24 I want to change your name to Tricky Dicky NIxon after you grabbed Kevin Willis in round 6. WTH are you going to do with Gallatin?
6/24/2011 9:40 AM
My theory as to why threes get an unnatural boost is that they're aided at the same rate as overall fg%...say having a lot of assists and running up-tempo can make a guy go from a 45% shooter to 48% from the field. If he also shoots 45% from three, that rises to about 48% as well...and that boost in 3pt% is more significant than a boost in overall fg% because threes are worth more. The SIM doesn't seem to differentiate, though.

The other thing is that often guys who shoot a lot of threes IRL seem to take a slightly higher percentage of threes (as compared to twos), which exacerbates the effect. Not so sure how to explain that one, though.

    Name Team Pos Usage% 2pt%# 3pt%# eFG% OReb% DReb% Ast% Stl% Blk%
Jason Kidd 05-06 Nets PG 19.2 44.4 35.0 48.1 3.2 18.8 32.1 2.4 0.6
Vince Carter 06-07 Nets SG 31.4 48.9 35.5 50.3 4.2 13.7 17.4 1.2 0.6
Grant Hill 96-97 Pistons SF 28.3 50.0 30.1 50.0 4.7 21.8 26.0 2.2 1.0
Jerry Lucas 68-69 Royals PF 16.5 57.9 33.8 56.7 12.2 26.8 11.1 1.1 1.3
Lasalle Thompson 84-85 Kings C 16.6 52.6 0.0 53.1 12.2 25.5 5.7 1.6 2.8

David Lee 06-07 Knicks PF 15.2 59.8 0.0 60.0 13.3 26.8 8.4 1.3 0.8

Not sure Lasalle will fill the necessary void.  Not overly concerned with low usage down low.... They will board and kick it out I hope.  Dreb is over 100 and I probably have too much Ast%.  Do not disagree Drexler could have brought a little more to the table.... but not points-  and that is where I needed the help.  Not in all around stuff.

As it sits, probably .500 and maybe the playoffs if I land a weak division.  In a tough division I will fall to the low 400's and enjoy another embarrasing season.  But I am looking at different seasons of Lucas and Kidd to find a better balance.

i like the feel of this team better than using the 10 mil haywood season. yao is very similiar to using shaq, imo, but much better free throw %, and he takes lots of free throws. def is ok at 62. he plays in the paint, and i was lacking a good paint player. this version of spencer plays 100% at sf, and he will platoon with rodman there, but rodman starts. though williams doen't shoot 3's, he does everything else well enough and plays def. but there are other guys who shoot 3's. 508-3's made. so, i have an inside-outside game. i'll keep my fingers crossed with this squad. thanks for the read.

I like the Ming pick and switching to a different Haywood season, but I wonder if your boards aren't a little light, even with Rodman - you'll probably be at a rebounding disadvantage whenever Haywood is in the game and one of your starting frontcourt is on the bench.

should end up being a solid offensive team - frontcourt just doesn't seem like it works together all that well to me. can't put my finger on it, but feels like a very average team to me (should be noted: I am usually terrible at evaluating which teams will be good before the season starts).

6/24/2011 12:26 PM
should also note that I always underrated Payton (despite my HDP team being built around him) - he's been dominating in some of the recent draft leagues. Always seems to shoot better than he should and score a ton.
6/24/2011 12:28 PM
well, tar, i have 5102 boards, and 1478 orebs... doesn't seem too light, and the %'s are pretty good too. as far as "feel" goes, always subjective.
6/24/2011 12:44 PM
yeah, it is a subjective thing. probably also a reflection of how each person likes to build his or her own teams - teams that aren't quite your "style" won't look as good to you.
6/24/2011 2:34 PM
McAdoo, Yao, Haywood, and Payton...all certainly scud's style

Rodman is everyone's style

I really wanted to build a dominant rebounding team that allowed oscar to really shine, especially at the line. I probably reached for Manu with my early 2nd rounder but I think he is a star in this league despite the low minutes. I was thrilled to finally get to use Marques, one of the best rebounding sf's in the game. I don't know what vancem is talking about with Noah but 12.2/26.1 are very good rebounding%s and there wasn't many guys left when I made that pick that could match those numbers while also staying under 5fp48 and having good defense(69 is good now). I used some of my usual favorites in Bynum, Junkyard, and Okafor to round out the pf/c spots. I'm excited to see what Melo can do in his 12mpg as he'll be my highest usage guy out there and he has some awesome offensive numbers. I wanted Nelson, but Anderson is a pretty good pg who adds needed ast%

I should be one of the, if not the best rebounding team in the league. Anderson is the only guy who doesnt rebound very well for his position. Oscar and Manu should have every chance to max out their ft's which I like. But overall I'm not too excited about this team. I don't have the kind of offensive team I usually draft and I may be putting too much pressure on Oscar, the turnovers could be awful. Like vancem said, I probably should have added a higher usage big man to help score the ball(amare was just sitting there too). Defense is ok but other teams are much better. This could be a playoff team but I don't see them getting very far.

here is my team:

www.whatifsports.com/nba-l/stats.asp

Strength is probably my defense---of the 9 guys in my rotation, my average defensive rating is 75---no one under 53, and 3 guys in the 90s

Happy with my EFG(average of my main 9 guys is over 56.0).....a little worried about USG----when Malone leaves the floor it will be bad..if Malone and Sabonis are out of the game at the same time, it will be beyond bad

Will be an average rebounding team....not great, but not horrific either
Frazier will spend most of his time at SG....my big guys will have turnover issues, but hopefully my guards will compensate for that
I used a cheaper season of Kirilenko to give me some more money on my bench---hopefully I don't regret that
Free throw shooting percentage is a weakness for sure----only at about 74% as a team
I have three threats from 3 pt range--although I'm not crazy about Anderson's 3PT%

As long as I don't have the first pick in next season's draft, I will be happy  LOL

Hey jayharvill what's up? You might be able to build a great team around Wilt. But I don't think that you will get that chance next season as you did pretty good with the trade. I'll be curious to see how our deal shakes out in the end. Thanks for giving me the chance to have Wilt. I have always wanted to use the dipper in this league. GL.
