I really need to see one person say "I'm not joining because the new recruiting is not intuitive at all, and very difficult to grasp/master, and there's not much obvious help out there" to believe this is even in the same zip code of true.
Not quite brand new players first joining, but when I first joined along with 3 of my friends right around when the beta was starting, we all loved the game and were very excited about the upgrades. However, they all quit after one season of 3.0, for such cited reasons as: "I really liked the old system, even if it was less realistic. This one is harder to get used to.... There's a lot less transparency in this version, almost too little." And "It takes too much time, and isn't fun. I liked being able to spend 2-3 days total recruiting, with the rest of the season game planning." With the most positive response being: " I like it but just don't have the time [to learn the new system]."
At the end of the day, while it is more time consuming than 2.0, imo, it isn't nearly as time consuming or as difficult to learn how to be decently successful as it appears to be. Nevertheless, the design of 3.0 has driven away relative newcomers for the above reasons. Would their perception have been different if they had never touched 2.0? Probably. Howrver, how difficult it appears to be, and how time consuming it is to both learn and actually execute until you've figured out a system to streamline the process more effectively, is definitely a reason why some have decided to not continue playing the game.
