First Free Agent: As much as I'd love to have that awesome Pitcher on my squad, I just can't pass up 1981 Mike Schmidt.

I actually considered this team with my pick. Surprised they were the last pick in that division. Great defense and bullpen, with a strong offense and solid SP. I think they’ll give that division a run.

AL West free agent: 2014 Felix Hernandez

I really struggled with this NL West FA pick for the Cards-A's team. We have great defensive players in the middle infield, though there are outstanding upgrade options like Yount available. But I can't see dumping Ozzie ... The weakest spot is probably 3B, but with the one really good Schmidt gone and all the other strong 3B on other teams in the division, the secondary Schmidt seasons of the 80s just don't feel impactful. I'm also not at all thrilled with the homer-or-nothing McGwire as a DH in a minus-HR park, so let's find someone who fits the mold of the rest of the team and gives us some real excitement sandwiched between Rickey and McGee atop the lineup instead.

1987 Tony Gwynn, Padres

I strongly considered Gwynn instead of Sandberg. Gwynn was an upgrade over Dykstra or W.Wilson, but not as much as Sandberg over F.White.

I was a bit surprised juice didn’t take Sandberg. I had him on the Jays-Expos team I mocked up. Significant upgrade over the available 2B options and a great fit for that lineup.

I said to hell with Second Base. Then again, I've got three 3B-men on the team (if I include Schmidt) rated as great defense so I could just slide one of them over there.
