Just ordered four baseball books - anyone read any of these?

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cooperstown - Mickey McDermott, Howard Eisenberg

Baseball's Natural: The Story of Eddie Waitkus - John Theodore, Ira Berkow

Hank Greenberg: The Story of My Life - Hank Greenberg

The High Hard One - Kirby Higbe, Martin Quigley

I've read the Hank Greenberg book... not much new... I had read most of the stories in other books.

Let me know if those other books are worth reading... I always thought the Kirby Higbe book might be good.

I've rec'd them all, Al. The only one with real heft to it is the Greenberg book, but they all look interesting. Will get to them as soon as I finish Andrew Chaikin's A Man on the Moon.

Has anyone read Fifty-Nine in '84...Old Hoss Radbourn, Barehanded Baseball, and the Greatest Season a Pitcher Ever Had? I've been looking for a good read from early baseball and this looks interesting.

Let me give another plug for "As They See 'Em"...very interesting and I certainly gained a new respect for the job umpires have to do....even felt bad for Jim Joyce who blew the perfect game last week.

I also had a chance to catch a Rockies game while I was in Denver last week, and actually watched the umpires, their mechanics, positioning and rotations, something I've never done before. The book gave me a new appreciation and aspect of watching the game.

Also check out "The Bullpen Gospels" by Dirk Hayhurst...haven't read it yet, but it has gotten great reviews.

I'll cast my votes for:

October '64

Sixty Feet Six Inches (B.Gibson / R. Jackson interview)

And, I don't think I saw anyone else mention this, the recent Satchel Paige bio. (Life & Times of Satchel Paige??) Fascinating book to really understand the negro leagues and a strong case to be made for Satch to be the greatest pitcher of all time.
