makes it interesting....

maybe I'm missing something but I don't see how it's interesting if everyone has the same roster.....some of these picks are unuseable at this cap...

Is that official?  Keep Pedro?
Yes, I will switch it back to Pedro, although I don't know why you would build rosters without knowing who everyone is picking. Although with some of the choices so far I might be better off picking John Tudor and getting only one usable season.

Thanks

I'd like to throw in a guy who should be in the Hall... Bob Caruthers - SP

Caruthers doesn't have a pitcher season less than $1M.
The rule says that the player has to have a season under $1M which Caruthers does.  I think he adds a wrinkle that will help diversify the teams.  Some can use him as a pitcher, some as a hitter and some can use his < $1M season.  So which is it?  Is he in or out?
Schwarze posted on page 1 I think which directly applies:

For players who are hitters and pitchers, you can choose which to use... but he must completely fulfill the appropriate eligibility requirements (as a hitter or as a pitcher).

So if Bob Caruthers has only a season that falls under $1m then I think you'd have to submit him as a hitter for whatever position he was playing.  I guess that wouldn't prevent anyone from drafting him and using him as a pitcher however?

Thanks.  Next time it would be nice to have something like that added right into the rules.  I'll replace Caruthers shortly.

Actually, when I wrote the original rules, I hadn't considered the possibility of a player who was both a hitter and pitcher being selected.  When the question was asked, I made a ruling.

"The idea is to choose players with multiple usable seasons. If you choose a player with no good expensive season, then all 24 owners will take his cheap season and you’ve added nothing to this theme."

Apparently, some people decided to ignore this comment.  What that means is instead of this being a 120M league where you have decisions to make on 24 players, it's turned into a $115M league with 19-20 decisions to make on players... and because of the 4-5 players who's cheap season will be used 100% of the time, the other 19-20 decisions aren't really going to be decisions.  Too bad.

I think everyone is going to have the exact same staff since most of the choices wouldn't play at a 100m cap, yet alone 120m.

edited to add: How is Cy Seymour an eligible listing as pitcher when he has way more and better hitter seasons? That's certainly not his primary position.

Is it too late to abort this theme and start a different one?

Yes - that's what I was afraid of tjefferson....your King pick was interesting at the time but now is not since you can't make a staff without him.

RP - Derek Lowe

Seymour is a legal pick.  Just like hitters who play more than one position, a hitter/pitcher can be listed as a pitcher if he qualifies as a pitcher.  I completely forgot that Seymour has good hitting seasons and is certainly usable in this theme.

Just because he qualifies to make the roster as a pitcher, doesn't mean you have to use him as a pitcher.

Also, I like the Lowe pick... It adds some more flexibility with the pitching staff.

Now, this is getting better.

We need one more pitcher and a middle infielder.

Waiting on elonsmitty and wildthings1 to make their selections.

Yes - we don't have to use him as a pitcher.  The problem is the pitching staffs are so thin that they are all going to be the same.  Having Seymour and Mullane as two of our allotted SPs constrains the options especially when one of the other ones is Silver King.

Although now that we have Lowe I suppose it is possible to go without King.....depending on what we get from the final 2 pitcher picks....
10/14/2011 10:41 AM
I am willing to change King, but the Seymour and Mullane picks make it such that anyone with a top season is going to have that top season used on the pitching side so it'd just slightly change the problem.
