I feel like there is a disconnect here... all3 and I (feels weird to lump us together but ok) are questioning whether going forward, it would be possible to develop a different method besides shoot to kill, and I think bruceleefan interprets this as an attack on the police officer and his judgement in this case. I fully acknowledge that he did was he was trained to do.
I appreciate the clarification and I'd also be thrilled if we discover a better way between doing nothing and the use of deadly force. Currently we don't have that solution.

The thread began specifically as a reaction to the IMMEDIATE condemnation of and attack on the officer from all corners including the WH and the MSM.

I was curious how many in here could acknowledge the officer deserved none of that. To acknowledge this was a pretty clear example of a justified police shooting.

Instead, many said some form of "he should've done something different". Some even doubled down, insisting it was a bad act.

That's different than "I hope going forward we can develop a better option", which is a sentiment i agree with.

bruce, nobody here has criticised the officer for his actions. I think we all agree being a "good" officer is truly a thankless job these days. Making blanket statements like "shoot to kill" is either ok or it isn't, just isn't realistic. Every policeman will tell you no 2 situations are alike and need treated as unique.
I never made any such "blanket statement".
You yourself just typed "Every policeman will tell you no 2 situations are alike and need treated as unique".

EXACTLY. and in some of those unique situations, the use of deadly force is necessary. This unique situation couldn't be any more clearly such a case. Yet in this very thread, despite what your first sentence says, folks ARE criticizing the officer AND questioning his judgment. Some already have lumped him in with Chauvin and I find that very troubling and reprehensible honestly.

I didn't, and don't, blame "the Cop." I blame the TRAINING that led him to shoot a kid within 10 seconds of arriving on scene. You earlier asked what my better way would look like. I'll answer by saying pretty much any other way than putting 4 SHOTS, CENTER MASS on a SIXTEEN YEAR OLD within 10 seconds of getting there.

Cops are trained to be 100% LETHAL if they are ever called to discharge their weapon. Maybe it's time to try and change that as a philosophy of policing from the start. Maybe it's time for a full register of police and standardization of their training on a federal level. Maybe you take psychological testing and standards more seriously and make psych training as much a part as weapons training, particularly for your average street cop in Anytown, USA. Many thoughts have been tossed out about alternative weapons and, in 2021, it seems that a non-lethal yet incapacitating method of applied force could be found. There's a few ideas for you to start with because I can't accept that we, as a society, can't find a better way than stacking bodies.

Look man, maybe you try all of those things and none of them work and the girl is still dead. At least you TRIED something, which is still better to me than the alternative of cops killing people, completely regardless of the situation, assumed guilt, race, etc, ad nauseum. The cop actually, by definition, "did his job." To me, that's a problem.

I'm in full agreement with "I hope going forward we can develop a better option."

Its really too bad a 16 year old decided to attack one woman and then attempted to kill another right in front of a police officer, Too bad her male accomplice was kicking a downed woman. Too bad the officer had to show up and ruin the kumbaya atmosphere they had going on there.

I'll tell you what. If I'm a white cop witnessing a black on black murder, I'd have to wait til it was over and just arrest whomever was left standing. After all, they're black and I'm a white cop. What possible upside is there in my involvement?

Then it would just be another number and no one would care. It would get no news coverage and I wouldn't be risking my safety or my job. Just clean up afterwards. That'd be the prudent decision.

I don't see wanting to gather all the facts and have all questions relative to the incident answered as "criticizing the officer". I see that as the way things should work in ALL cases, before anyone starts spouting-off.

This seems like a strawman of rsp's position. I don't think he's advocating for the cop to do nothing.

It looks like the only one amongst you who approaches this from a common sense but fact finding mindset is All3.
he is not usually realistic and rationale but he is this time.

And at this point there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to bring in race considerations.
