DD-

My pitching staff..

Koufax('66) is excellent, but in his final year. I was hoping to get anyone of them but him...
Wilks next season: 104IP, .270 OAV, never sees 140 or more IP again.
Leifield: decent '10 and '11
Contreras: 196 IP of .256 OAV next season, then balloons.

Bullpen:
With the exception of Rivera, not much past this season.

My superstar, Ott, is a chronic underachiever in the sim...

We're all gonna be scrambling for pitching after this year, not just you...I didn't give anyone a superstar with 10 or more strong seasons. Someone got Dimaggio, after 3 strong seasons he starts to fade...Pujols, 8 great seasons, that was about the top one...Players like Raines, Roy Thomas and Ashburn were given out as marquee OF. They offer OBP, defense and speed. They aren't great impact players like Pujols, Dimaggio or Ted, so I gave them an extra season or so. Rickey's career is up and down, so that owner gets the good and bad to live with. Same for Ted, after a season whoever got him would have to do without him through the war years. He returns with strong seasons from '54-57, and a pretty good '58. Understand that everyone wasn't going to get exactly the same thing, so luck of the draw figured in. I'll bet someone's out there that got worse than you did...

I'll gladly trade my roster for your roster..

Three points I must make...
1. I wanted to avoid a long, drawn out initial draft...

2. I didn't want to set everyone up for 5 seasons with only tweaks to make..I wanted it so that everyone would have to do some work, and this served the purpose and avoided the long initial draft...Most of the players on the lists have limited future value, longevity, or both.

This was not to screw anyone. This was by design. You will be forced to retool, you weren't handed a bunch of guys to plug in for the next 10 f'n years...You got a competitive roster to start with, then you'll build it to suit your taste.

3. I wanted everyone to be able to be competitive in the first year. Most of these teams are within $5M in salary...Only 8 teams draft in each of the era drafts, you can get alot of quality there..Other progressives draft 24 teams from a single season and get by..You will see that these teams over time will be near all star quality teams by having the 3 seasons to draft from...A lack of quality in the drafts won't happen...Please give this a chance to show itself...

Next season: A peek into the future..

'31 Draft offers Hubbell, Grove, Gomez, plus a few more with ERC#'s under 3. Others have very good future value. Lots of available position players to be had in that draft(George Herman Who?, Lou Who?, Who's Double X?), and only 8 teams drafting them...Several rookies in '31 don't blossom until '33 or '34...Happy hunting...

'56 draft- Mantle, Newcome, Spahn, Wynn and Ford, not to mention Musial, Kaline, Aaron and a ton of good infielders.

'81 draft- A ton of great players(Schmidt, Dawson, Rose, Carew, Yount), and lots of good pitching.. Sutton, Ryan, Valenzuela, Carlton, on and on...

Your 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks will get you everyday starting players, and there are plenty of players that offer future value in the draft's later rounds. Even if you need 10-12 picks, you can easily retool...I tried to stay away from our draft years for the bulk of the players on the lists..Most of the players that started on MLB teams in '31, '56 and '81 are gonna be available come draft day...

I'm in a progressive where a guy was thrilled to get Bob Knepper in the first round to give him a much needed SP...In this draft a player like that might not get drafted at all....

None of these teams are lost causes after this season...Your rosters in the future will be better, probably much better, than what you get to start with...

Chill dudes...

Obviously these teams weren't set up for longevity...Get through the first season and go into GM mode and rebuild your team the way you want...

Our "staff" won't have a single current player on it in 5 yrs...So???

We might have 2-3 pos players still around in 5 yrs, certainly none in ten yrs...So???

The BIG selling point of this league was NO MONTHLONG INITIAL DRAFT!!! And close behind was only 8 teams drafting from your pool each yr...

Give it a chance, your team(s) and this league will come along nicely...

I considered a salary cap, and putting a limit as to how many players you could throw away...The drafts will be deep....I was gonna make you keep some of the crappy players for an extra season or two..

Did anyone ever inherit a progressive team that was successful in the past, then the owner ran it into the ground? This is one of those teams, built to be competitive, but alot of the guys on the roster are just about at the end of the line. You have just been hired as the new GM, and your job is to remake this aging, one time dynasty into a winner. During your first year you'll evaluate talent, and look at who's gonna be available in the draft...

THAT should have been the intro for your classified...

True dat. I should have been more clear as to my intentions.

With that said, who wants to make me an offer for Koufax?? I'm a big Mike Scott, Gibson and Dazzy Vance fan.. I didn't look, who got the Professor(Maddux) ?

BTW, I just took over a team over in the Glory Days progressive, and promptly had to dump about half of my pitching staff...Another rebuild in progress...These guys have been hoarding pitchers, and I'll do good in getting them to let go of anything of value...Wish me luck..

I am not wishing you luck. I am in that league too and seeing you take over that team is worrisome. I know you will build it back up at my expense. LOL

I LOVE the fact that I have no starting pitching to speak of after this season. My ace, Addie Joss has only a 1/2 time season after this and then dies of meningitis. Take that, DD!

Reminds me of an owner who founded a progressive, drafted himself a team that was great in the short run, dropped the reigns after a season, and then quit the league entirely as his team was close to fading. Oh, wait, maybe that's too close to home!
10/30/2009 6:06 PM
well I've never played in a progressive before but my initial analysis of my team would seem to indicate that my team is one of those that DD is ******** about. I have 5 or 6 offensive keepers that are going to be good for the next 3-4 years and only need to really worry about pitching which goes south after this year. I'm hoping I can figure this thing out before all you sharks devour my squad. oh and I guess I lose Berkman as an outfielder so he will be available for trade at the end of the year.

I'm not sure any of us have any "real" long-term pitching...

The first couple of drafts are gonna be a mad scramble for pitching...Should be a hoot...
10/30/2009 7:13 PM
I guess everyone has it about the same then, was thinking I got an overly horrible draw.
10/30/2009 8:49 PM
I don't understand why anyone would want a team that they won't have to manage for 4 or 5 seasons. The best part of being in a progressive is the trading and drafting. I've roster holes to fill after this season, like everyone else, and i'm looking forward to it.

BTW,with only 8 teams drafting from 1 season it shouldn't be that hard to restock your roster.
