I believe that a certain amount of unpredictability is good, healthy and necessary. The "ping pong ball" idea goes far beyond the amount of unpredictability that should exist in recruiting and would make things unhealthy and involve far less skill and strategy than the current system. It just goes way, way too far imho.

And marica, I think the reason that it's taking so long to resolve is simply that hannibal won't give in.

Well, we have agreed on two out of three things, that is pretty good for us ;)  IMHO, there is no unpredictability to speak of in recruiting at the D1 level now and that is why there are no battles to speak of, because coaches know when they have no chance so they leave the recruits alone.  Recruiting at the D1 level is, again, imho, really a mess.  I guess since everyone here has pretty much agreed that they do not want more predictability and it appears that no one wants less predictability that it must, in the opinion of the majority of coaches, be perfect the way it is since any change would make it either more or less unpredictable.  I know that no one likes losing a recruit but I was not under the impression that everyone thought that it was perfect the way it is, (at least I wasn't under that impression until reading this thread) ;)

I take a third view - I would like it more textured - more variables - dont need more or less randomness and dont need more or less info - BUT, need to

1. strengthen the effects of favorite school and close/far preferences - maybe not for every kid, but create SOME recruits who desperately want to stay close and some who desperately want their fave school

2.  add more preferences - warm/cold climate, big school/small school, academic/party school....love a certain conference  (I've always dreamed of playing in the ......).....we could think of 3 or 4 more categories...

hannibal, your responses are getting more outlandish. Did you really just type:

> The costs for distance is right there, the actual formula for determining those costs are not known we just know the prices because we absolutely HAVE to know the prices or else recruiting would be impossible.

hannibal: "Actually you don't.  They could make recruiting one giant black box if they wanted to: not tell you how much money you have, how much anything costs and just tell you if you have enough money to do what you are asking to do."

You can't be serious, can you? This would basically end recruiting for all intents and purposes. You would have no way to strategize, no way to budget, no way to plan. No way to day anything, basically. Just totally ludicrous. You yourself admit you can't come up with a legitimate reason to reveal what you want to reveal, and these are your arguments/justifications in response to what everyone else is saying?

Thanks for taking the bait daalter.  How you feel about this is how I feel about hiding the CV:HV ratio -- it is just hiding things for the sake of hiding things and makes it more difficult for no good reason.

(BTW, you could make that scenario workable by giving people a gauge that told them what percent of their funds they have remaining.  Then tell them what percent of their funds everything cost.  You could make it more confusing by doing the same but instead of percentages display 100% as $10000 and adjust the rest accordingly.)

It's not just hiding things for the sake of hiding things. Not even remotely If that's your thought, you could attempt to make that argument on any piece of HD that isn't 100%, fully disclosed.

There is inherent value in having some of the info being uncertain -- particularly since it's uncertain in a way that with a little strategy and elbow grease, you can figure out. Those bits of uncertainty help create battles, they allow coaches to leverage different strategies, etc. If everyone had perfect information, there would be practically no battles, as a coach would know before going in that they would lose.

Apart from that, there is inherent value in having some aspects to the game that are not spoon fed, that coaches can work to figure out. Personally, I wouldn't be interested in playing an HD where everything was laid out perfectly. I think they've actually done a nice job in delineating which parts are 100% laid out there and which parts still require a little digging. Not perfect, but I think they've struck a nice balance.

  • Add CV/HV limits
  • Focus on preference, prestige, coach history, timliness of efforts
Marica is absolutely dead on with his posts.  There are very few battles and nearly all recruits at all levels have multiple schools considering them.  That would be good for the game.
