And, to underscore why OSFA and always are stupid, it's an entirely differently situation if I had won 61 instead of 71 last season.   I'd have wanted your turd and Branson because I wouldn't be able to putz around with my weak 2B/3B situation this season.    Which would have meant I wouldn't have been offering a big bonus to Carew to pitch 90-100 innings this season.   My future players would have no value to me if I failed to hit the MWR.

btw i wasn't bragging, just reminding you why my way supersedes yours since you decided to get snippy with me.

mike's right that I don't know EVERYTHING about anything.  i'm still wrong from time to time in HBD or make a questionable move, and i don't have all of the answers.  but i do have quite a few of the them, and this is one of the more painfully obvious ones to me.

i don't know what OSFA is.

i don't see how that underscores that always is stupid

One size fits all, try to keep up with the thread.

Because my situation changes greatly if I need to win more games to stay in the league.   I needed a 2B and a 3B.   I get your turd for 2B and I backload the hell ot of Branson's deal so I can get more players in FA.   I trade my prospects and am far less concerned with 1-2 seasons from now.  I've already explained why I wanted more free payroll for future seasons.   I don't care about that if I think this might be my last season in the world.   Of the 20 on my current BL roster, 10 are still under controlled salary.   I'll be adding 2-4 more so I've got some future payroll issues rolling in my general direction if I keep this team together.

Well my OSFA methods are built with the intention to win games, so I'd think that it would fit your situation with the dire need to win?

FWIW the one underlying assumption in all of the statements I make is that your goal is always to win as many games as possible.  I don't think tankers really need my help since it's pretty impossible to not dominate after 3 straight seasons where you add a top 5 pick + $30M IFA.

I have 7 arb-el players next season and maybe 1 FA that I'll re-sign.   So a couple(one definitely) of those arb guys will be given LT deals.   As I said earlier, I've got 5 M/T options for 19.2m.   That's just a few things that have to be accounted for when structuring deals.   Depending on who get arb'd/LT'd/released will determine where my payroll crunch will come.    And how many I win will probably help determine who stays/goes,

I look at my teams now and three seasons into the future.  Maybe that is overcomplicating things.   But part of the game I enjoy is projecting my BL roster 3 seasons from now with no additions.   That way I can figure out what I need to address.   It works OK in a couple of worlds, not so much in MG.   But, as I said in the WC, trading isn't a good option for me in MG.   I think some people don't like me.

I roughly do that, but the majority of my focus goes toward my team in the current season.  I always have an eye on the future to set myself up, but as long as I have enough core talent I feel pretty comfortable that I can adequately fill in the gaps with role players when the time comes.

Depends on my situation.   What I've been doing hasn't been working.  And that's to make a 4 year run at the expense of the 5th year.   I pretty much got what I seeked in S13-S16,   But my "off" season in S17 was followed by 4 slightly below .500 seasons.   So, in the middle of that 4th one(the low water mark of 71 wins), I decided trading whatever future chips I had for that shot at 83-84 wins and a possible WC2 just wasn't worth it.    Then I did it again in S22 to finish with 83 wins and out of the playoffs.  So I've hung onto my prospects for a couple of seasons while trying to fill a few holes with FA, hope to be in contention this season and expect to be in contention next season.

Of course, that's really my problem with the "contract template" that jvf and deano insist can be used for all situations.

Do you ever look around and see that you're on the same side of an HBD argument as tec and the opposite side as me and wonder if maybe you should re-consider?

I mean you're terrified of trading with me in MG, yet you seem to be pretty confident telling me my HBD opinions in general suck.  That's sorta funny to me.

TBFTM*, I wouldn't want to trade for backloaded contracts, either.

*To be fair to Mike, try to keep up with the thread.

There's that too but deano will point out that the 8.8m last year is only 2.2m is you decline the option.   But, of course, he'd be selling that to someone who was removed for failure to hit the minimum win requirement but was given a 2nd chance.

And, as I pointed out earlier, we have an owner in BTP complaining because he's up against next seasons cap with about 40% being mutual options.

It would be really funny if he argued that by offering such a large amount in the final year, he's actually saving his trade partner more money. Ya can't beat these deals!!

5/7/2012 2:58 PM
I have no doubt he does use that as a selling point.
