Btw -- for the 2019 tournament, we will test a new playoff point system at least in Round 1. The motivation of this change is to reduce the strategy of optimizing for LDS wins, while not removing the potential to move up via playoff bonus points. The two options I'm considering:
A) Remove 5 point bonuses for making the playoffs, winning the LDS, and winning the LCS. Increase bonus for winning the WS to 10 points. This would reduce the average points per team to somewhere around 4, and the WS winner would be lowered to 21. This option satisfies the motivation for this change.
B) Do everything from option A, but also subtract 1 point per playoff loss. Losing a series would result in 0 points (i.e. you couldn't go negative). This would reduce the average points per team to somewhere around 3, and the WS winner would also be 21. This option additionally increases the importance of every game.
Generally, I'm of the mindset to change one thing at a time rather than multiple, so I'm leaning towards Option A, but do think that B could add something totally new to the tournament. Feel free to add any thoughts before I sit on it for a few months.
