Change in Offense and Defense Topic

I just took a team that runs the Triangle and Zone. What is the best way to transfer over to other offensive and defensive sets?

Should I practice the new sets and play with the old ones (because their IQ's are A's & B's on the old ones and D's on the new sets I want to run)? Or do I have to sacrifice this season and to convert the underclassman over for upcoming years? Or should I not worry about running the Triangle and Zone and just stick with them?

Advice greatly appreciated.

Option 1: Run the old. Practice only the new until one of two things happens ( 22-25 minutes practice time on each if you can. 1) The end of the season or. 2) You get 7-8 guys to at least C+ in the new. Either way this season will suffer some.

Option 2: If this season is going to be poor anyway  Practice and run the new from the start. Put about 22-25 minutes of practice into it if you can.

What do you want to run in the future?

I was leaning towards fast break and press. Good options?

Well, you are asking a very biased coach. I coached 20 yrs RL as an uptempo/pressure coach. I have 4 D2 teams. Three are motion/press and 1 flex/press team. I won my NC with motion/press. I am currently looking for the right FB/P team. My teams routinely average 89-100 points a season.

I love FB teams and have had a lot of success at D3 with them. Having said that, there are a lot of coaches who really dislike FB. In my opinion FB/P is very difficult to plan against. I have converted 2-3 teams to press. If you decide to go press there is a third option to those above to get your press in faster with the least amount of grief.

While practicing as above play half court press to zone until your press is good enough to stand on it's own.. You can either install the half court press right away with the poor ratings and let your zone cover your backend or wait until you get 7-8 guys at C-.

I have run a zone both in HD & RL. I don't care for zone. It is to easy to beat and to passive for me personally.  Triangle is a joke. It is not even a real college offense.
Triangle is an offense that was developed to take advantage of the defensive rules in the NBA. These same rules don't even exist in college. It is easy to defend. In addition, it is against my aggressive nature. It is an isolation slowdown offense by design.

Hopefully Al Black and Gillispie see your post. They are experts in the press in HD and can give you much better insight than I can as to how this game is played.

If you decide to convert sitemail me if you need any input.

How successful are Fastbreak/Press teams at the D1 level?

ditch the old and run the new asap.  IQ is relatively meaningless
