What kind of players can a B- team realistically sign? Are 4 star players rated in the mid 600s possible?

b- is the threshold of where every player in the game will talk to you. there may be just a couple who are like dropdowns but that would be it.

as far as who you can realistically sign, now that is way too situationally dependent to say. if you are in a low competition, low population area, you can sign up to and including the best player in the country. if you are on the east coast, as an a10 school with a strong big east and acc, a strong 4 star player may very well be as out of reach as that near perfect 5 star.

it really just totally depends on the situation... you have to assess the quantity of high caliber players in the area, and the quantity of aggregate openings by the schools you simply cannot compete with, and shoot for the top end of the players who are left. what that translates to in your situation can vary quite a bit... if you have a bit more info, like where your school is, how strong the conf you are in is, how strong the neighboring confs are, that would probably be enough to get an actual estimate.

I'm in Big Sky, have a team in MS. Obviously, ACC is close but not too close (MS, LA, etc. I have an advantage). I'm flushed with cash, probably comparable to alot of Big 6 conf teams.

All depends.  D1 recruiting is very very situational.  If the player is local, and no one else wants him, I would say you can sign everyone up to about #8-#10 at their position.  At that level, if I were an A team, even in the 500 mile range I would fight ya for him.

I have landed a couple 4 star recruits in the upper 600s.   I think they were between 660 and 690.   I don't believe either were higher than #14 at their position.

I have had two in 8 or seasons of being a B-.

I normally have something like a 2-3 star guy, a one star guy and a no star guy.

Take that for what it is worth, I haven't won a NT game in forever.....

I think everyone is giving solid advice ... bottom line is that it's very hard to predict and quite situational. But in general I think a four star is a real stretch for a B- team. The fact that you have a ton of cash obviously helps, but you run the risk of having to blow your whole budget to get him, which is basically never worth it when you have a bunch of openings. (And if it were a 4-star with strong potential, I'm guessing the big boys would be on him, so in most cases we're probably talking about an average or below four-star.)

you also need to consider tactics in all this.  Lets say you have a pile of $$ and there is a good 4 star.  He's near you.  You get him considering you.  There will remain until the moment he signs a risk that an A will swoop in.  That risk is bigger if there are A prestige teams within 360.  Bigger if he fits what they might need or want.  The risk still exists outside 360 and even if they dont really need him.  You interested in taking risks or signing a few solid guys and avoiding battles....When a B- reaches high he takes risks.....and may get rewards of course.

I imagine I would have no chance at top tier transfers even if they are extremely close?

I've signed 4 Stars with C+ at SMU.  It's all possible once you hit B- and above.

I have seen B- sign a 5-star #1 ranked player before.  But it came a major cost, team had 6 schollies, and spent entire budget on the guy.  But they got their man.  So, at B-, in theory, it's possible to sign any available recruit.
