broberg is starter 3, lamb is starter 4, but lamb relieves for broberg

how did that happen

no closer no long no mopup, two setup men were tired, had two lefty specialists and two righty specialists not tired

i say bring in the specialists BECAUSE THEY'RE RELIEVERS but i guess the sim thinks bring in someone on his dayoff

yes  my starters are always checked for relief

what inning are your specialists set to be available?
8/1/2013 7:21 PM
any

It doesn't matter, if your starters are checked to be used in relief they'll be taken over the specialists in a long relief situation.  That's the way it's designed to work.

My opinion, like an armpit.......................everyone has one.

That's a stupid design plan. ANY reliever should be brought in first (even in Long relief) before another starter should be used.
My Rationale is that in the playoffs. Say a 5 game series. The GM should likely set a non-used starter (likely starter #3 or #4) as a long relief man as usually you would reduce your rotation to 3 starters. If that is quite common and normal (I believe it is) then it is apparent that should a GM WANT to use a starter in long relief he can set things that way. Therefore to have Sparky bring in a rotational starter rather than a reliever makes NO sense!! (when the owner/GM does NOT have the settings calling for it)

Nope, not how it works.  When you check the "use starter in relief" box, then sparky treats that starter like a long reliever.  If you don't want him used that way, don't check the box.  No real life manager uses LH/RH specialists in the 5th inning (or if any do, it's an extremely rare occurrence historically).  The vast majority of managers who have been in the majors use a long reliever in the 5th inning.

it shouldn't take the next day starter though should it?

Managers and players only take it one game at a time. Don't you watch interviews?

I thought I read or maybe was just incorrectly told - that the next day starter won't be used in relief unless it is a LAST resort (similar to a mop up)

Yea. Sorry about one item. I never have my rotation starters checked available for relief. I would think it very unadvisable to have your next game starter checked as available for relief. I had mistakenly assumed that nobody would have their rotation starters checked as available to be used in relief.

I do slightly disagree about the assertion by Contrarian that NO real life manager would use a specialist in the 5th inning. To me, any critical game situation where there is a significant NEED to get 1 guy out calls for a LH or RH specialist-----assuming you have other decent relievers to follow the specialist if the specialist succeeds and gets the out!!  The key run or rally of any specific ballgame could occur in ANY inning, 3rd 5th, whatever. Why leave the specialist on the bench and let a key hit or rally continue. You may never have another occasion to use the specialist in that game and therefore why have him at all. Kinda like a "use it or lose it" theory. The specialist sure doesn't do you any good sitting on the pine.  LB

my other two starters were tired by the way (or below 90 anyway)

so lesson learned

if i were managing live though i gotta say i woulda used a specialist, and then another, and then maybe another before going to tomorrow's starter
