Can I cut whoever I want? Topic

Yes, that's my question. I'm taking over a team and may want to cut some players. Are the any penalties? When is the best time to cut someone? Thanks.

You will only be able to cut down to 3 players remaining.  As long as you are not cutting your own signees, then there really shouldn't be any negative consequence.  However, you won't get any additional funds until next season.

I took a look at the team.  If you intend to still play the press, then I would advise against cutting anyone (unless Schneider really has no room to improve).  If you intend on changing defense, then carry on.

I second what Rogelio said, everybody on that team is at least a solid D3 player (Maybe not Schneider, if he has no potential, which I would doubt).

I do know a coach who took over a team and immediately cut two guys and a third guy, his best returning center, quit based on his best friend being cut. It's the only time I've actually seen any consequences for cutting players when arriving at a new team.

That friend leaving consequence I believe is a possibility if you cut a player recruited by a previous human coach. It is rare but I know a coach who has had it happen twice.

there is some roster size that the SIM will not let you go below - may be three

and for sure there is a risk that a player may quit when he sees his buddies leave - I dont think much risk from cutting one but grows with multiplpe cuts

be sure that if you want to cut, you do so before recruiting starts - and understand that you get zero extra $ for the guys you cut......until the next full season if the spot is still open

also, after you cut the first couple your reputation will start to be affected. If you cut a bunch of them it might drop to A- or so, which can keep you from being eligible for some job openings, so if you plan to move on/up before a few seasons have passed keep that in mind.

Seems like you all think Schneider is my worst player.

He is blue at defense, perimeter, stamina, and durability (is that still as useless as it was in the old days?), he is black in passing, work ethic, and free throw shooting, and red in athleticism, speed, rebounding, shot blocking, low post, and ball handling.

Should I cut him? I'm thinking no but want other opinions now that you know his colors.

Also you should know all the guys on this team were recruited by former human coach.

With those potentials, Schneider is valuable.  I agree you shouldn't cut anyone.  6 open spots is plenty!  and yes, durability is useless.

No.  His ATH/SPD may end up a little lower than you really want, but with blue DEF & PER, then he could be pretty good.  Since you get to zero-out REB & LP practice, then his poor WE won't hurt too much.   The chances are good that his Stamina will max out a little low to ever want to start him.

Since you didn't mention changing systems (which I don't suggest anyhow), then keep all of those holdovers.  I suggest signing 5 freshmen and 1 junior (redshirt no one) or 4 freshmen, 1 junior & 1 soph (inform the soph of redshirt during recruiting).  In any event, don't sign a senior.  That'll leave no open scholarships to fill after the season, but it would maximize recruiting cash when the, then 4, juniors graduate.

I'm a bit confused why folks are picking on Schneider...to me the  most questionable guy on the roster is Johnson. Obviously, the potentials play a huge factor here, but I look at the rating and the work ethic and the fact the kid played nearly 20 mpg last season and wonder.

At present, his ATH/SPD/DEF aren't anything special. None are what I'd call liabilities, but neither will any of them do him many favors. Putting him at point is suicidal with BH/PASS in the low 30's. He can't play his listed SG slot because his PER rating is subterranean and his BH/Pass numbers will be a liability there as well, and with a 12 rebounding, he's not going to do any favors for you as an SF. If I was going to cut anyone (and I wouldn't, since there's already 6 open 'ships), he'd be my guy. Even if he's still blue in some areas, he's got a lot of development to do to rise out of career backup status IMO.

I had the exact same question

This is true, but an A- will be restored back to an A+ after a single offseason.  Nothing to worry about.
