Looking for a D1 BCS level recruiting mentor Topic

The last two seasons at Louisville I have spent $135,000 on two recruits I didn't sign. I am looking for general tips or someone to provide me advice on things I may be missing that are hurting me in recruiting. I understand that there will be times that I miss out on a recruit but I watch teams with lower prestige and less opens scholarships pulling in better recruits.

I feel like i have had lots of success at D2 and D3 but I am really struggling with recruiting at what I think should be a top BCS school. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

To be honest. every season is different.   The "game plan" even chages between day 1 and day 2.

You are better off finding a mentor who actually goes thru the decision making process with you as the recruiting sessions occur.

I concur with mully. I'd love to help, but I have a Knight D2 team, and while its not likely Valdosta St and Louisville would be looking at the same recruits I don't think it would be right to be that involved with another school while I'm recruiting the same world. Of course, if I land my final player, I won't have any openings next season, so in that scenario maybe I could help out.

Oh, and before you decide, realize that I am not really a master or anything, so my help might not even be all that useful...

A tip i almost always follow is don't commit all your money early.  Be in the position where you can let a player go.

Take dac's modesty with a grain of salt.  He knows what he's doing.  But these guys are right...it's a flowing, constantly changing landscape of tactics and risk/reward.  And some luck.  And some bad luck.  Just remember to not let it get too personal, there are so many meltdowns...heavy emotions.  Also, I'm the guy who tried to RS a 4-star on the cycle of signings (a mere 1 season ago) after pulling him away from a sim to be the lone consideration and my greed turned into a great signing for simmy the following cycle.  So be careful with my words in regards to recruiting.  But I love D1 recruiting.

I had a particularly bad recruiting period.... It just seems that A+ teams have too much of an advantage when recruiting.... No one battles them and they clean up signing sims for cheap and then all the B to A- schools kill each other over the scraps.

But it's earned.  You work your way up to have that advantageous prestige.  And those smaller schools can wreak havoc on overextended giants once the little man syndrome subsides and the math checks out.  And I think you are also missing the part where A+ schools fight other A+ schools constantly.  Look for all the battles...and non battles for that matter...and try to get an idea of what has been invested in those recruits...hopefully the picture becomes clearer the closer to signings...or during for that matter.  I personally love the system and the challenge of getting an A+ prestige.

I'm not sure what the coaching landscape is like in Knight but the Louisville area is probably one of the toughest if not the toughest place to recruit in HD in my opinion. You're looking at a state that generates 50 total recruits in a good year lol with another A+ baseline school in Kentucky near by - then Indiana is only 80 miles away from Louisville - then you've got Illinois and O-State - Cincinatti - you know this list goes on.  I coach Louisville in Phelan and most often don't even waste my time battling for local recruits as there's too much competition and not enough distance with too many A ish schools in range. I think some of the previous posts are spot on - you have to wait/ be patient and see what transpires as recruiting goes on. Don't show your hand too early unless you're confident you can sign guys. Don't neglect the internationals either - I notice most of your recruits are probably within 400 miles. That region is always a potential blood bath during recruiting.

Agreed, I have Cincinnati, and that area is a bloodbath.  Close proximity to B12, B10, ACC and SEC schools and if you don't have A or A+ prestige you're gonna get killed.  I am certainly no expert but I've had better success in waiting and then picking my battles.  Out of the gate, I'd go for lower rated locals with good potentials and then wait.  Pay close attention to battles and then swipe a recruit from a guy who is in one or more battles.  Also, don't feel that you have to fill your class, there is nothing wrong with one or two walkons.

depends on the landscape. In an 8 season period, Duke in Phelan managed to sign 0 players and 1 player when it had 6 openings and 35k+ in postseason cash.
