I moved to D2 after my first season at D3 where I had a terrible record. Struggled my first two seasons rebuilding my D2 team but the last two have been much better. I'm still not qualified for any D1 jobs though and I was wondering what I need to do. Not that I have a problem with Division 2 but I'm kind of just wondering what the breaking point is I guess. I thought maybe when applying for D1 they possibly look at your cumulative record which for me is under .500 or maybe they want 4 seasons of success which would explain why I'm not qualified.

Rep and loyalty play into your ability to get jobs, along with your last 10 seasons of your coaching resume. A PIT bid and a NT bid along with 3 brutal seasons isn't enough to get the job done, as you see. You might need another 1 or 2 NT bids to qualify for D1.

And to add to that, you will initially only be qualified for some very low level D1 schools, almost all with D or D- prestige. It will take something like another 4 or 5 NT seasons (or maybe more) before you start to become eligible for schools with prestiges up into the Cs and Bs. Some coaches like to wait around in D2 until they can get a shot at one of those better D1 schools and some prefer to jump right into the lower levels and work their way up from there. Its really all just a matter of preference.

Is it possible to go from D2 to one of the crappier teams in a major conference in D1 or for those schools are you going to have to be in D1 before those jobs consider you?

Possible, yes. But you're going to have to be in D2 for a long time.

It took me 10 seasons of moderate success to go from D2 to the A10.

Looking at your resume, mikvitu.  You've got a "great" reputation, but that means that it hasn't quite recovered from some action that you've taken.   That hurts a little.  Your overall record is under .400.  That hurts a lot.   The NT appearance certainly helps.  No that you've turned that team around, then a couple ~20 win seasons with NT appearances should get you into the low D1 territory.  For a variety of reasons, just concentrate on winning D2 NT games for now.  

Alright good to know. I'm pretty content in D2 but was just wondering what the requirements were since it's so easy to move up from D3.

Not trying to bust your balls or anything, but I don't think regular season wins have anything to do with getting to D1...it's all the last 2.
