Is there an ideal time to promote? I always promote top prospects at least once or twice in a season because of the stat gains from promotion. Is it better in the long run to let them sit at one level for one season?

I don't think you're really getting "gains" by promotion.    WifS has said the promotion "bump" is just a marker.   I've really seen no evidence to the contrary.    IMO, players should be in AAA when they have to be on the 40.   There is a lot of ways to reach that point.
