Offer existing owners the opportunity to buy *one* season at the new player promo rate as long as they use it on a new team. Said owners get attached to new teams, and there are fewer openings in the future. Lather, rinse, repeat as necessary. Voila. Crisis solved.

Create alias, buy new team, transfer to old username.  

A work around if the $10 is what concerns people.
