Exactly. "Gentleman's Agreements."

Yea, that's 1 scenario. You forgot to protect him, but you were protecting 40.

Any pre-conditions on trade backs is collusive; if not trading value for value, is collusive

Personally I would never be lenient about rule 5 protections and here is my logic behind that... players are only eligible for R5 after what, 3 seasons?  And the only reason somebody would beg for a mulligan was if a guy was actually good, like 75 or better overall let's say.  It's awfully convenient to "forget" to protect a guy in the week before R5, did you "forget" to call him up the past 6 months of gameplay when he was good enough to get promoted?  Imo it's not a punishment for forgetfulness it's a punishment for being a bad manager and stashing guys forever.  Not my problem.  The guy wasn't doing you any good in his 4th season of AA.  Do better next time

There are certainly legit prospects who may not be ready to join your ML team by the time they're Rule 5 eligible.

Even if they are, they may be blocked by a comparable veteran who is playing out his contracts, or is difficult to trade for various reasons.

While I might be convinced to return a mistakenly released player or a player put on the wrong waiver wire I would not do it "on the cheap". Either you offer me something back of value or you keep that value and I keep the player I claimed.

On the rule V forget it I wouldn't return him. It cost me a rule V pick to get him and if the player is worth crying about then I probably had a pretty high rule V pick which is now wasted.

People who want rule V players returned only ever seem to consider what they lost and not what the drafting team looses by returning him.

I also would never ask for any rule V players back that I forgot to protect. It happened to me once and I lost 4 pitchers who are now in the big leagues and were picks 1-3-7 and 33 and I never even mentioned that I forgot to protect them.

As I suspected, the player in question was traded back for nothing.   My one season in Musial was enlightening.   Seems there are 20ish owners who know one another in the real world.  They sort of operate how they deem fit.    Not that there's anything wrong with that but it would have been nice to know before joining.

When it comes to Rule 5, I used my pick to get the player, and if I would have chosen someone else instead of said player, I probably wouldn't send him back.  Your mistake would hurt my team if I send the player back for nothing, so I'd want something in return.  In the case of "I mistakenly released this player" there's no harm in sending him back for nothing.  Again, you don't have to, but I would.
