When to call a player up Topic

So my first pick on my first team is probably ready to come up http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=6092968

My team is bad, but the guy is raking at AAA. It seems from a utility perspective the best thing might to wait a real life week into next season and call him up then. But I also wonder a bit if guys get bored playing below their level for too long. I have wondered it about this guy who is now in third season at AAA

Likewise when you would you call this guy up?

My plan is to wait one more year on this guy

Also curious what effect, if any, Kennedy's owner putting him right into AAA might have had

Call players up when they can help you achieve your goals.   Those guys could probably help at the BL level but aren't on the 40.   If you don't think you can win, it's kind of pointless to add them to the 40 until necessary.

That said, you have position players in their 20s.   You control them for 10 seasons at a minimum(3 BL minimum, 2 arb, 5 long-term).  So the 21 y/o will be 31 when he's FA eligible.  He'll start declining soon after.   There's no reason to hold a 23 y/o in the minors.

You could have just played Bagley in the majors from Day 1 last season, as long as you're willing to move him as far away from SS as possible

There's no reason to hold a 23 y/o in the minors.  -indeed

I know Mike said it, but I want to emphasize - There's no reason to hold a 23 y/o POSITION PLAYER in the minors.  There may be a reason to hold a 23 y/o pitcher down, as their skills decline differently.

I guess I'll add - unless he's a guy who you don't plan on having for 10 years.  Maybe he's a 23 y/o shortstop who is still developing his fielding.  But the general idea still stands.  He likely will be better at 23 than he will be at 33, so call him up.

stats in the minors are meaningless. really, don't even look at them. They are no indicator whatsoever of how the guy will perform at the ML level-- ratings will tell you that.

also, tthe last guy you linked Bagley is not and will never be a SS

I would NOT call Bagley up; he's not good enough, right now, to advance you towards a championship as a starting player.  He's an average or slightly below average hitting, error-prone 3B.  I also think that he might develop into a guy whose bat can cover his glove at SS; if he gets to 85-77-90-77 in the glove ratings, which he might, I could see living with the errors if it made sense with the rest of your roster.  it would not be optimal.

I see you've promoted Kennedy already... he's a pretty unremarkable starting LF, and won't get meaningfully better.  (Basically, at 2B he makes a ton of errors and has a slightly above average bat for the position; at LF he's a potential Gold Glove but has a well below-average bat; and he'll lead the world in caught stealing if you bat him at the top of the order, which will neutralize the SBs).  I might not even arb him twice.  Which means that Burnsy's comment is on target-- if you're only using him for 5 seasons you could have waited until your team is really ready to contend and then promoted him.  Besides, he's probably a utility player if you're really ready to contend (albeit a very good utility player).

Oh Kennedy isn't mine- he's just someone I tried to acquire a few times when I first joined the league and it looked like he would develop into more than he is currently...  I was wondering if being thrown right into AAA and staying there for a long time hurt his development

His development blew.  My guess would be bad coaching-- the fielding coach for that franchise isn't very good right now-- but it could be bad luck.  Very seriously doubt it was all the time spent in AAA.

Where do you draw the line between good coaching and bad? (Is there a numerical border)

Do you think that team having a terrible coach one year (I think it was season 21) irreparably damaged the player?
6/7/2014 5:08 PM
No numerical border... but realize that patience and discipline (patience more important, imo) also influence development a lot.  The FC for them right now has 61 fielding, which is marginal-- but terrible patience, which makes that worse.

I think that a terrible coach followed by a great one will lead to most of the lost ground being made up, especially if the good coach is in the second full season. But that's just an opinion, based on a small N... would like to hear from others on this.
