How much money do you need for a strong battle with the recruit close to you... D3 vs D3?

That's a tough one. Some coaches will fight to the end; others give up more easily.

If the other coach has more available openings, I rarely do battle.   You have to look at his other recruits, however. If he's in multiple battles, you have a better chance.  If he has 5 openings, but only 2 players are considering him, you're at a disadvantage

If I decide to go after the recruit, I'll secure my other recruits first, then spend as much as necessary on the contested player

this is like the story of the two guys out in woods on a fishing trip, the stumble into the den of a grizzly bear.  The bear chases them.  They run but the bear is gaining on them.  One guy says to the other, why are you running, that bear is going to catch us....the guy replies, I only have to run faster than you......

And the answer is that if prestige and distance are comparable, you need more money than the other guy is willing or able to spend.

I just dropped 5.5k on a battle with a sim over his primary recruit which I won. If you think the target is a primary for your competitor, expect to drop a ton.

this is great advice and wanted to rec it. i just wound up doing exactly this and it paid off for me. the one thing I would humbly add is that while the open slots matter for the budget, in the case of an AI, that also limits how much it can spend even on its primary recruit unless it wants to field a team of walk ons. I'm guessing the sim will probably quit around 5k +/- a few hundred. Getting the easier picks first is the best thing anyone can do before getting into a recruiting battle over a prize recruit.
