Do I have to continue sending SV's to pull someone down? Or will they naturally eventually drop with no other attention. Recruit has told me to keep in touch and said I'm the backup option... I'm running low on $ and am wondering if I should weather the storm or move onto plan B

Pull downs and drop downs are seperate. If, for example, recruit A would need 15 scouting trips to pull him down, sending 13 sounting trips would not make him drop to you any sooner than he would have if you didn't send any at all.

They usually don't drop down without SV's. That's from my experience. There are supposedly different times throughout recruiting that you'll see a player drop down, but can't remember off hand what those times are. Some of the more experienced coaches here can specify on that. Without knowing more specifics on your situation, I'm unable to comment on whether you should move on. Just keep in mind that you may not be the only one waiting for this player to drop. It's a little like gambling at this point if you don't feel you have the money to pull the player down. He may or may not drop. Also, your plan B may be taken while you're waiting on plan A to come around. I guess it all comes down to how much more you like plan A than plan B. Hope this helps. Good luck

thanks dudes, I think I bit off more than my budget could chew, I went for 3 drop downs and 1 has been successful while another looks to be good this cycle but that still leaves me lacking in my 3rd scholly... I realized that my idea was stupid when half my budget was gone and they still weren't budging.... Well I live and learn, next off-season will be better!

That isn't right. Many recruits will drop without sv' s.

I said from my experience Trentonjoe. That's based on my recruiting in Smith and under my other username in IBA. I would say more than 50% don't drop down to me.

I think people are confusing dropdowns and pulldowns..

a pulldown you have to send SV's
a dropdown can occur after a certain amount of time has passed without any effort at all..

How do you know if a guy is a drop down or if he's a pull down?

Dropdowns require no effort on your part. Pull downs you have to send svs.

I signed all 3! effort paid offffffff.... 3 D1 guys to my D2 school

If someone gives you a backup message, there are several of them and they are listed in a lot of places, then they are a candidate to be signed by you later ... in one of two ways ... Dropdown or Pulldown.

1.  Dropdown - Most recruits who give you a backup message will, at some time before for the END of recruiting (not necessarily before the BEGINNING of signing), become available to you without any effort on your part ... IF ... they are not recruited by anyone and stay undecided.  Some (but not all) players who are Considering another school can also become available.  When they become available they will let you know that with an unsolicited message ... IF ... you have called them at least once.

2.  Pulldown - Same backup message as a dropdown candidate ... the difference is, you can take someone who gives you this backup message and make them become available on your own timeline rather than waiting for them to dropdown.  You do this by sending them Scouting Trip visits.  It normally takes between 12 and 20 visits to pull down a recruit at Div-2 or Div-3.  What you are looking for in a pull down is the recruit to send you a message saying that you are no longer a backup option after your scouting trips.  Once he does that, he is then receptive to you using normal recruiting techniques on him (ie, Home Visits or Campus Visits).  Most, but not all, of the time the recruit will accept a scholarship offer once he has sent you the information that you can recruit him ... IF ... no one else has put effort into him and he is still "Undecided".  If someone else puts in effort, then it is just like any other recruiting effort ,, you have to put in enough to win AFTER you get him to consider you.

So, the messages you get to tell you that you are a candidate for a pulldown or dropdown are the same and the message you get when the recruit will accept recruiting actions from you are the same for a dropdown or a pulldown ... SO .., the only difference is for a dropdown, you do nothing and hope no one recruits the guy until he sends you a message he is ready for you.  On a pull down, you send enough scouting trips (usually 12-20) to induce that message he will accept effort from you.

For low Div-1 schools, you also may need to Pulldown higher level recruits as they will give you a backup message when you try to recruit them.  It has been my experience that it takes more effort to pull down those recruits than in Div-2 and Div-3 ... so usually 20-30 Scouting Visits instead of 12-20 visits.

Some Backup messages (text in a phone call response from the recruit):
if his 'A' list schools don't pan out
if his top options don't pan out
if that falls through
fallback option
top schools don't come through
Keep in touch
backup option

Responses where you do not have a shot, so don't waste time/money:
If this is anyone not from <your school>
sucking up my cell minutes
either I said something wrong or he thinks poorly of
I've left at least 6 messages on his machine in the past week
He basically said he'd play for us when hell freezes over
his father who told me he wasn't interested and to please stop calling
I can't think of anything that would change my mind
Do you believe in miracles
so I'm going to have to say 'no thanks'
Please stop calling me coach
coach, but I don't think
but I think you're chasing something you'll never catch
didn't think you were actually going to show up

Some responses where you have pulled down the recruit or he has dropped down (some of these are calls, some are from the Scouting Trip evaluations for Pull Downs):
We have a shot if you want to take it
list of schools didn't pan out
sounded only moderately interested
Can we set up a call
moderate level of interest
about in the middle
would be a dream
why they make me wait to sign
geeked to play a major part
would be nuts
expressed how much I think of
REALLY love your program
then I can't wait to play.
looks like a perfect spot for me
I like the idea of playing for you
seems like it could work out
You should have told me it was a basketball scholarship
From what I know of the program, it may be something I'd be interested in
I'm not sure how I would fit in there, but we can definitely talk more about it
I'm not against playing there
Seems like it could go either way
but perhaps we should talk more about it
is still on the fence coach
I think we have a shot at him
I don't know what I was thinking before
big fish in a small pond
may make sense for me after all
we have a shot
if you're still interested
Guess its whoever drops more
I was glad to get a letter
Give me a ring
me playing for you
if I could sign today
was more concerned about the 'prestige'
back on the board
you've got yourself a player
I'm not completely sold on
give me a ring when you have a chance
genuinely thrilled to hear from us
we have a great shot
