Switching defenses Topic

Yo this is my 1st season of HD so im still trying to figure some things out. But i wanted to switch my defense to fullct press from man to man. Would this be an effective switch considering my entire team already plays man? And also would my players learn how to play the defense quick enough for them to be effective at it?

Totally up to you.  I guess the first question to ask, is how long do you plan on being at SUNY IT?  If you're just using it as a stepping stone to D2, then there is no reason at all to change defenses.  You're only going to cost yourself wins.  If you plan on being there 4+ seasons then go for it.  I think a lot of players switch O/D when they are taking over a new program just because they feel like it, I know I was guilty of this.  Look into the differences between the defenses and ask yourself, am I switching because I like what the new defense provides, or just to make a change?  Switching from M2M to press is a very legitimate strategy, so if you've done your research and know what you're doing, go for it.  I would put between 22-25 minutes into the new defense (and 0 for M2M).  If you are playing a lot of upperclassmen who already know M2M, then you can continue to play it while practicing press early on in the season, until the players become competent in press.  After an entire season of practicing press your players should be in the B- to C range in terms of IQ.  This is far from ideal, but it won't hurt you the way a D IQ can.

Adding onto clouseb's excellent response.

If you stop practicing m2m, your players won't regress. They'll just 'freeze' at their current IQ.

If this is your first season of HD, you may not want to switch to press. You have to have a pretty deep roster to effectively press and you might want to get the hang of recruiting before you go that route.
