Best methods for D3 pulldowns Topic

I have another question(trying to improve at this game)

I know pulling down D2 prospects into D3 is one of the best ways to recruit superior talent.

I am just wondering how you treat D2 pulldowns, and if D2 juco's are "pull-downable"

I believe I only know 1 method that I have not tried, which I read from aejones guide being 10 scouting trips and a scholarship offer.

I know there was another thread discussing recruiting, but I don't think it was targeted for pulldowns, just D3 national recruiting of 40/40 calls/letters.  For that I do have a question, for this method is it sending 40/40 at once or being utilized such as 5/5 every other time block or other variations that end up totaling 40/40 total like 20/20 twice, if so does sending more at once provide a better chance, and is this a valuable method for pulldowns.

Is there any other idea's that work well or if something like 2/2 Campus/Home Visits and a scholarship offer would do the trick?  Is there a "maximum" number of pulldowns people can get or does it just depend on distance and effort(is it possible to pulldown 4 players if all 4 are withing 40 miles, or something similar or just usually 1-2 per recruitment)

Again thanks to anyone replying, as I am just trying to become better, and pulldowns are something I have not taken advantage of, and I should start it appears.

1. You can pulldown D2 JUCO's.
2. The AEJones method is the only one I use.
3. Use the 40 calls and letters together all at once. It only works on guys that are on your D3 list though.
4. ONe HV and a scholly will get most recruits to consider you at D3. It doesn't work all the time for dropdowns but it works most of the time.
5. Pulling down local players is pretty cheap. If it works after the first 10 STs you get the guy for under 2k. You could sign all your players like that.

That's the advantage of being near a cluster of D2 schools in D3.

First, don't pull a guy down just to do it.  A lot of recruits that start at D3 are better than the D2 pull downs.  As far as your questions:

1.  Yes D2 jucos can be "pull-downable" just like any other D2 prospect, just remember that not all D2 prospects can be pulled down.  Be sure to call the recruit or coach first (I prefer coach because they will always give you an answer) to learn if they can be pulled down.

2.  To my knowledge, and other with more experience can correct me if I am wrong, the only way to pull a guy down is with scouting visits.  If a guy has not been pulled down then they will reject home and campus visits, and I don't believe the calls and letters will do it, though I'm not 100% sure.  The reason scouting trips work is because the recruit can't reject them.  In my experience it usually takes around 10 scouting visits to pull a guy down, but this number does vary.  The other option if you find the player is recruitable is to wait and see if they will just drop down to you without being pulled down, which could save you a bit of money if he does drop but you run the risk of somebody else recruiting him while you're waiting.

3.  The only limit to number of pull downs is your budget.  If the guy is within 200 miles you can probably pull him down for about $1600 (again, give or take depending on how many scouting visits it takes to pull him down), so if you find a bunch of guys within this distance you can really pull them down fairly cheaply, or at least for less than the $3000 you get per scholarship.

At D3, I never try to pull down more than one player at a time.  If you try to pulldown multiple players simutaneously, and other coaches also want them, you could spend a lot of money with nothing to show for it.   Once a pulldown is only considering my school,  I may look at another one

Like alblack said, the biggest risk of pull downs is another school jumping in on the player.  If a D2 school jumps in, you can certainly still win the battle (they have no more advantage over you at that point expect more $$ most likely).  Since Jucos seem so popular sometimes their is more risk they will be recruiting at some point by a D2 school.

Like Al, I don't usually try to pull down more than 1-2 at once… always saving some $$ for battle that may happen late.

I have beaten many D2 schools for players if you budget correctly and are lucky enough to have distance advantage or $$$ advantage (like you have class of 5 to fill and lots of post season cash, and they only have 3 scholarships to fill - so the recruiting budget may actually be in your favor).

Often I wait until the day of signing to pull down a guy. But like anything, there is a gamble - sometimes if you go early in the process in the hope it will scare others off since they might not want to battle.  Or you could go early in the process and get hit late, near signing, by a coach that doesn't mind a battle… potentially losing your gamble and eating a few thousand.

Sometimes you can pull down from several hundred miles away - I remember a friend recently risking 5K to pull down a guy he really liked.  That was risky but things were going well and no one was after the guy he liked, so he risked it and it paid off.

I should add, to your original question - I think the only other way to pull down is with campus visit for players inside of 70 miles…. so that is a very limited pool of players but sometimes they will accept the CV and that could save some cash.  I haven't had much luck with that option for some reason.

Additionally, you can pull down D1 players as well.  This also seems rare but I have done it a few times.  Probably could have tried it more but often many D1 players nearby are worse that other D2 or D3 options strangely enough.  You cannot pull down a ranked player to my knowledge.  I *think* these are D1 players that essentially are going to drop to D2 and are close to your school.  I can't remember if they all were within 100 miles… it's been awhile since I have done it.

Lastly, I recently had a Mr. Basketball drop down to my team at D3.  I had never had this happen before, and it was a guy from Alaska, but it did happen (he's on my Millsaps team now, D. Jacobs, SF).  First time I ever saw that.  Most Mr. Basketballs have rejected my advances or are ranked (and ranked players never go D3 right out of high school - definitely will as a transfer, but not out of high school in my experience).

I just got my first d1 recruit at d3 this year. He was 20 miles away. Should be a beast with 4 high highs

mind blown... I never thought it possible to reach into the D1 depths and be successful.
