50 is way too many minutes to be practicing defense. Anything over 25 minutes and you start to get diminished returns. This means that you're not getting as much improvement from your practice minute as you could be.
Playing this game at a high level is all about maximizing efficiency. You need to get the most out of every practice minute and every recruiting dollar that you can possibly get.
On a related note, whenever I take over a team formerly coached by a human, I'm amazed at how many practice minutes are being wasted in Study Hall. Some coaches put 8+ minutes into SH for all their players. Don't be that guy. It is uncommon for me to have even 1 minute of study hall for upperclassmen, and most of the time freshman can get by with <5 minutes. For a little extra boost, I always remove all study hall minutes for all players after the second term grades come out late in the season.
