Can anyone confirm that if I redshirt a junior and his WE drops to 1 that he absolutely will stay?  I've done it with seniors to get an extra year at the right time and they always stay.  I assume that juniors are the same and will always stay the next two seasons, but have never tried.  Anyone know for sure?

I don't know for sure, but I bet they would leave.  Seniors don't leave because there's no opportunity for them to do so.  You can *cut* a guy and send him into the recruit pool, but a redshirted guy doesn't have an on-ramp, so to speak.  They have no way to go anywhere else, so they stay.

I believe there is always a chance they may leave, but the farther they have been at the program it may go lower and lower for the same reason llamanunts stated. But overall I do believe somewhere I read there is always a chance, its just very small. You're more likely to lose a guy over minutes than a redshirt I believe.

i've done it twice, and they've stayed both times. I've never heard of them leaving in that situation.

he will stay. *(based on my experience) If you are up to the risk (if he has any development left) leave him off the bench chart set at mop-up (he should never enter games) and practice his main growth targets hardcore all season, then redshirt him before the CT. Still get some growth from him before you lose all the WE.

so just to clarify - if you redshirt a senior it's possible they will stay for the next season?  

I understand I would keep him off the depth chart and set to mop-up minutes all year, and then apply the RS at the end of the season.   But, I don't understand why he can't leave when the season is over?  Also, I am sure he would complain and lose WE during the season… but that may still be worthwhile.  

I redshirted a senior he dropped to 1 WE and stayed.

Update - as expected he stayed.  I waited until game 26 to redshirt him.  His WE dropped to 2.  He only dropped 4 points in the offseason, which was a pleasant surprise.
