I have never redshirted anyone before. Iam curious as to what to look for in a player to judge whether they will take one. I have a glut of bigs and want to redshirt.

I redshirt all the time. Lowest player at his position or lowest player on the team will usually take it. In your case probably either Ballard or Grissom. Try the one you want.

I look to R/S a guy with low WE and a lot of growth potential or my best player from my freshman class.  Freshman aren't going to contribute their first year so might as well get an extra year of growth and IQ development out of them whenever possible.

I think it is important to have a player redshirt every season. And I try to redshirt my best recruit first. And that's because, I figure my redshirts will generally start an extra season during their career. Why not have the best develop even more before you use him, Many will not accept redshirt so If they don't, I just go down the ladder. Sometimes none of my rookies will redshirt, so then I might try with my sophomores. I think the best recruit will accept about 50% of the time, especially if I already have formidable players ahead of him.

And sometimes redshirting a sophomore is better. You don't need to spend on Study Hall (SH) if you got them good grades as a freshman plus their WE went up, even if it is just 2-3 WE for the second string. So they can develop decently. About 30% of the sophs will take a redshirt..

I usually redshirt for balance. For each position I want a SR-SO or a JR-FR. Doing this means I will always have a JR or SR starting and a backup. If a recruit is gonna be #3 on my roster at a position, it means he's only getting 2-4 minutes a game. So I Red Shirt him. This usually only happens when I have SR-SO starting

Example:

Year 1: SR-SO-RS
Year 2: JR-FR(rs)
Year 3: SR-SO(rs)
Year 4: JR(rs)-FR
Year 5: SR(rs)-SO

There is a chance I get another freshman to RS in year 3.

A REALLY good time to do it is if you are stuck with a SR-JR combo. Very unlikely he plays over ever with those two. Then you have the RS for 3 starting seasons.

This at D2 where you don't have to worry about players leaving for NBA. So if you are at D1, you might have to think it through more.

Yeah, D2 and D3. D1 is a whole different ballgame.

Do you need to assign study hall minutes to a redshirt?
9/25/2014 10:05 AM
Technically you do not need to because he will be eligible at the start of the next year. However if he has a low GPA going in your going to have to put very substantial inutes in study hall the year after his RS. I prefer to give him some minutes based ion his incoming HS GPA. Then I can lessen SH minutes his first eligible year.

What happens with the work ethic on a redshirt year? Does the player get the work ethic back once he has been activated and plays on the team?

If his WE drops you may want to consider pulling it and moving to another player. If you leave the redshirt on, that WE is not coming back up. Pretty much ruins the player. If the player tells you via email how mad he is at the RS and his WE drops, then pull it and move on. What you experienced is the negative side of the RS.
