I feel like this process changed a long time ago, but I didn't pay any attention as I've hardly ever done it. But I'm in rebuilding mode, with a player who has high potential across the board, and he can be a stud if given the extra year.

If I redshirt him and he doesn't accept it, his WE will drop to some extent? And if I were to remove the redshirt, would he regain that lost WE?

Is there a significant risk of losing him to a transfer if I redshirt him against his will?

If he's a new recruit and you didn't inform him of redshirting during recruiting, then yes there's a chance he won't accept the redshirt without a drop in WE (could be anywhere from a significant drop to almost nothing).

If you remove the redshirt, you will regain back all of his WE.  Putting on the redshirt yet again will now ALWAYS result in a worse result (i.e. bigger WE drop) so if he won't accept it to your satisfaction the first time, doing again will not be better.

The only way I think he will transfer is if you promised NOT to redshirt him during recruiting but you redshirted him anyways.

Thanks, buddha. Very helpful.

How do you promise NOT to redshirt a recruit? In the form of a start or guaranteed minutes? What if he rejected the guaranteed minutes offer? All good, right?

Either that or offered a redshirt in recruiting and then removed the redshirt

Yes, all good if he rejected GM.  The lowest rated incoming freshman will always accept a RS no problem. Usually an incoming frosh who is lowest rated at his position will accept the RS with minimum or no drop in WE. Usually an incoming frosh that does not fall into either of the above will take a RS with some small amount of WE drop. Soph's will almost always have a substantial drop in WE if you try to RS them.

I pretty much don't agree with that.......at least in d2 and d3.......many sophomores will take a RS without a penalty..........I don't know about being the lowesst rated FR but most freshmen at D3 will take the RS without penalty.

This is what I meant.  If you informed the recruit of your plans to redshirt him & he responds during recruiting calling you crazy and probably drops you from consideration, then an option appears on the recruiting tab in its place labelled "inform recruit of non-red shirt" which is essentially a promise to NOT red-shirt him (thus breaking a promise has a high chance of the recruit leaving).  If you click that option, then its promising him you won't redshirt him when he arrives on campus and is a way to remove a start/minutes promise as well.

If you break that promise, then its the exact same thing if you promised a recruit start and/or minutes, and didn't fulfill that promise, then he will likely leave at the end of his freshman season.

But that's different since in that situation, you're playing the recruit and you were asking how could a recruit leave at the end of season if they were redshirted.

I tend to agree with Joe here. I've also has several cases of my lowest rated freshman getting ****** about taking a redshirt.

I dont know if I have just been having really awesome luck or what but it seems like guys are taking the redshirt a lot easier than in the past. Not positive but I feel like I have probably hit a streak of like 10 straight of it working in my favor.

heres a semi related question...

if i have 5 juniors,   and redshirt a senior during recruiting... can i still recruit a juco junior?
or
if i have 6 juniors, can i redshirt a senior?

and,  i should know this,  but how are inels counted in the whole class size thing?  i gotta guess they are counted as they are listed... so if it says "sr"  even though i know hes going to be a "sr5" next year... he still counts with senior class this year... not junior class right?

Not always.  I've had success putting an RS on Sophs, especially if you are deep in that position and they didn't have a significant role in the prior season.  It's hit or miss, but it does work every now and then.
