Fastbreak offense Topic

I run a fastbreak offense, and my understanding is that you run this offense in order to get down the floor as quickly as possible, before the defense is fully able to set up. This in theory should lead to lots of easy baskets. I have always run this offense with a fast paced tempo. My question is: Why would you run a normal, or slow down tempo with this offense? Because, to me the whole purpose of this offense is defeated when you slow the tempo down. Might there be instances when it might be beneficial to slow the tempo down, with this offense, such as when you play a team that has superior team speed, and, or athletic ability? Thanks in advance to all who share a response.

You can't run fastbreak at slowdown, if you set it to slowdown then it will just be ran at normal.  Unless you're way better than your opponent, I wouldn't ever run fast paced against a pressing team.  I have seen some turnover rates for FB that are through the roof against the press.

I always run a fast-paced fastbreak against a press, because that is how you draw lots of fouls and get easy points in the double bonus.

i almost always run a fast paced offense , i dont change my offense against people i change my man to man defense. i like to run man with fastbreak to save on stamina works great and still is very effictive defense.

Agreed. If you have a good, athletic fast break team with decent ball handling, you will kill the heck out of a press team that is below par, because you will be shooting free throws like there is no tomorrow. And if you start either fouling out a guy or two or just have them sitting long stretches due to foul trouble, you can really start an "exhaustion cascade" on some teams.

Of course, a good press team can avoid it, but there are absolutely reasons to play uptempo fast break against the press.

good comments. i will just add that fastbreak does add a decent amount of fatigue to the situation. depending on your depth, and the depth of your opponent, running uptempo can make a lot of sense, or it can cause you much harm. fouls, fatigue, and the desire for volatility are probably the three main factors that dominate the uptempo decision.

i don't disagree with your view on fastbreak and its purpose. however, the way uptempo works in this game, i don't think it actually impacts the execution of the offense in the way you describe. it does have impact on fouls and fatigue, that can certainly contribute to the effectiveness of your offense, but i don't think there is any correlation built into the system, that a team running fastbreak will be more likely to beat the opponents to the basket, or to draw easy fouls, by speeding things up.

on a final note, i also believe that the delta in pace from a normal tempo motion, flex, or triangle, to uptempo, is larger than that of fastbreak, it seems that running fastbreak, you are already half running uptempo, and it doesn't allow you to increase the speed by another large increment, on top of the increase already present. im not suggesting the uptempos of those offenses are similar in the net end result, just that you actually get less increase in tempo in FB than you do elsewhere, when you go with uptempo.

I still want fastbreak to be basically another slider from, say, 0-5 that you out on top of another offense and say how much you want to try to initiate fast breaks out of that offense.

In my ideal world.

I seem to remember admin making a comment recently that the fastbreak offense was going to be eliminated as it currently exists.

Is this accurate?
How soon might it happen?
when it happens, how would you deal with the teams that are currently running FB and would likely have mostly F IQs in the other offenses?

Thanks.

Hi Dave - yes, that's the plan although no timeframe has been set yet. Teams that have IQs in fastbreak will be able to choose a halfcourt set to move those IQs over to.

We'll maken an announcement well ahead of time though.
