Check out this player. Everyone here will tell me not to play him, but he pours 23.4 pts a game. I think I have other options, but I kept him in all games. Do you think it will hurt me on close games, if so why? And what should I do to keep my team scoring, while he is on the bench. He plays Under 20 minutes, scores 23.4... can pass some.

The 10 defense probably hurts you, but the scoring with the 99 PE is definitely a big asset to your team. If you double team the guy he is guarding, you could minimize the impact of the 10 defense. You definitely can't argue with the results, especially since he is shooting over 50% from the field to get those 23 PPG.

i am not strongly against these kinds of players like some folks are. but, note that your weak schedule is a big part of why he is doing so well, high per low spd/bh players typically are better against weak defenses, but struggle against quality teams. so in the competitive circles, i guy like that isn't going to get you much. however, those kinds of guys are great on developing teams, even d1 mid majors (obviously better ratings required, but similar idea).

even the guys with the speed as well, who are high profile scorers even in high d2, aren't as good as their 20ppg suggests, because the defensive half of the game, they are dragging you down. but to me, its not like its a 50/50 split -  50% great, 50% ****, averages to average. i think its better than that because on defense, this kind of dude is roughly 20% of the defense (while on the floor), but more like 40% of the offense. so i think you have a player who actually is 2/3rds a really high contributor and 1/3rd ****, which averages out to good, i guess. it just depends on the team, if you need the offense, these guys can be great. if you want to win a championship, and already have a good team on both sides of the court, these kind of guys are probably not going to cut it.

Gillespie Against the 7 ranked team, he scored 15, had 3 turnovers, 5 fouls. He did not shoot .500 ; against the 22 ranked team, he scored 15, had 4 turnovers, 5 fouls and shot Under 36 %. So I think you are right. Both were press team, which means a man to man team would have made his game even worse. These players tend to do better againts press, 2-3 zone... They struggle against good 3-2 zone and against man to man, they are abysmal. Tarkanian DII is about beating GLV teams. I recruited differently the last two sesons because I met these teams in the NT. First NT, I lost a close one against one of these teams in the Sweet Sixteen. I had no weak guards. Last year, my player Robert Wagner, jumped into the team rotation and he made us look bad against CJWOLF, we got obliterated in the first game of the NT. So I am sure I can't play him if I play any GLV teams...

Now, do I have options on that team to keep him on the bench? Mario Mershon is a bit better, but still a liability IMO. I don't know how to get the scoring without getting so weak defensively.

I would never recruit a player with a 10 defense, ever.  On top of that his ATH is too low.

He can not play defense at all.

In my opinion, any team in Division 2 needs an average of at least 60 in both Defense and ATH to compete in the post season.

I definitely agree with the 60/60 averages and would almost go so far as to say that the championship-type teams get closer to 70/70.

I would be bringing him off the bench. The idea is to use his strength as a weapon, and try to avoid putting him in position to get exploited. If he's the first backup for pg-sg-sf, for example, with high distribution, he'll still get his points, and then it's more difficult for the opponent to key in on him and exploit him. I agree with Emy and Hughes in that this is not normally a player I'd recruit, but since you have him, might as well utilize him. He'll hurt you more in the postseason against a human who is game planning. But instant offense off the bench can be useful, especially if most of the rest of your scoring is from the post.
