After how many games into the season can you call up a player without burning an option year? Thanks!

My rule of thumb: if your minor league season starts on the AM cycle on a Thursday, do your call-ups the following Thursday after the AM game.  It may be an extra game or two, but it takes the math out of the equation.

I think the terminology is wrong.     If you have to call up a player, he was in the minors.   You already burnt an option year if he was on your 40.

Does it matter if the player was on the DL during those 20 days in the minors?

No.  Only BL service counts.   He could have been on vacation in Mexico during those 20 days.
