I am interested in signing a Type A pick that has cleared Free Agency, Spring Training, and the season has begun.  I have the 19th pick in the draft.  If I sign him after the  season has started do I still lose my draft pick.

Yes. Type A and B compensation lasts until your draft prospects show up on the "Prepare for Draft" day. At that point the draft order is locked in and compensation goes away.

If you have the 19th pick, you will lose your second round pick, not your first.

I don't think 19th pick is protected.  I'm not taking the time to check this, but for some reason I think 15th is the cutoff.  You should check before you sign a Type A.

The only protected picks are the natural picks 1-16. I say natural as for every Type D pick in the top 16, the protected pick moves down another spot. So in this case, the pick is only protected if there are 3 Type D picks ahead of selection 19.
