Recruiting battle… how did I lose? Topic

I'm coaching D1 Notre Dame in Tark (B+ Prestige) and up until the cycle before signings (5pm EST) I had 15k on a recruit with him considering ONLY me.

At the 5pm cycle before signings start, C+ Prestige Cincinnati comes into the mix. I end up pouring the rest of my money in and after spending a total of 45.8k, I still lose. I offered 15 minutes, no start though.

Both Cinci and I were about the same distance,  220 miles and 240 miles, respectively.

My question is, how much must have C+ Cincinnati been able to dump into this guy to win him, especially considering he came in super late on him?? Does coming in late no longer matter?

Thanks!

I believe and I may not be right but at least double what you spent. He should of spent around at least 80k being a full grade behind you. Thats a guess and I bet someone in here has the exact amount if not a better estimate.

How did you lose? He spent more than you.

How many openings did he have?

The "super late" is largely irrelevant especially since you only put $15K on him.

he had 6 openings so i was guessing he had 110-125k total… he was in other battles as well so I really didn't think he had a shot.

I was also thinking his efforts would be discounted since he came in late with his recruiting… but I guess my last 30k was discounted as well?

If I would have put 45k in on day one would that have won?

I mean, the best thing to do is just ask Cincinnati's coach now that it's over

I think he only needs to out effort you by 40-50%, not 100%.  that's very doable.  I had a similar battle as a B school vs. C- school and lost.... went through extensive calculations here.  you also have to assume you each used your money most efficiently (HVs I would guess in this case, since most seem to agree that HV inside of 360 miles is best use of cash).  with the geography being a toss up, I would say he only had to spend about 67.5K or so give or take a few dollars.

tianyi7886 was the one who put forth 40-50% advantage per letter grade in that thread.

Also, I don't think any effort is discounted regardless of the late push.  You may have won with the 45K up front if he was nibbling and only trying to match your efforts and save money.  in that case, you may have gotten so far ahead that the player signed with you.  I don't know how far ahead you have to get, but that's certainly possible.  my understanding is the game tries to encourage battles - so it seems like unless there is overwhelming effort discrepancy between schools, the other coach gets a chance to respond.

Agreed with carl. I think considering credit helps you out over the course of recruiting but there's never a penalty for recruiting someone. You didn't have a lot in so you didn't get the credit. At least that has always been my understanding.

A few things here...for starters it isn't about DOLLARS SPENT, it is about EFFORT MADE. Not knowing how either of you spent the money, you need to at least consider that he may have spent his dollars more wisely (i.e. - in a way that earned more effort per dollar) than you did.

My understanding is that consideration credit is only good to keep someone else from being considered...once they get on the kid's list, the effort scored by both partied is scored evenly. You don't get "extra" just by being the first one in on the kid once the other guy gets on the consideration list. Also, since nobody else has said it, consideration credit only begins to accrue starting 24 hours after recruiting has started...so if you jump on a guy in the first cycle after recruiting opens and he's considering you after the mini-cycle, you're not actually building consideration credit from that point. A lot of people over-estimate how much consideration credit they've been amassing because of this (not that consideration credit is that big a deal anyhow, especially when D1 bankrolls are involved).

Are you sure there was no carry-over money involved? Had he signed anyone the previous year, or did he have the mother of all war chests prepped for this season?

Definitely try and do a post-mortem with the guy. Most of the times I've been in a close battle, the other coach hasn't had any trouble opening up with me and telling me what effort he put in and when to try and grab a kid.
