With a Flex big men less important? Topic

Does Flex benefit from running "small ball" Maybe only 1 real PF/C and 4 guards or 1 PF/C 1 SF and 3 guards?

Assume get killed rebounding or is there less damage then running small ball with any other offense?

Gillispie and other veterans have written that Flex utilizes ATH more than Motion. So, that would factor into my positioning.

That's a good question and I'm not sure I know the answer. I run flex and I've always heard/read that it relies heavily on PASS, so in that sense having three or four guards = better passing = better offensive output.

The next question would be is it worth the defensive tradeoff? You would clearly take a significant rebounding hit, and depending on the attributes of your guards maybe an interior defense hit too. How does that all balance out? I would guess it's a net negative but I don't know for sure. Your defensive set would probably factor in as well...

Flex emphasizes Per more than any other set. In this game it doesn't utilize lp big men. I usually play 2 big men but that are good at reb, def, ath, and passing. Sometimes I'll use a sf type player with high reb and per.

On the other hand, at tex tyler, I had a flex team that featured a scoring big man. Don't let the set stop you from that stud.

+1. I agree. I just don't recruit for that, but if you do they can be good scorers

The last thing you wanna be is one dimensional, no matter what set you run...because I love it when the other team is one dimensional.

I agree that one dimensional is bad, but guard-heavy doesn't have to be one dimensional. If you played four guards, two of whom were good perimeter shooters and one that was a slasher, along with a post player that could score in a pinch - that's not too easy to defend in my opinion. I'm not convinced you could consistently keep that level of talent...but if you could I think it's an interesting question whether that team would be successful.

That tex tyler team did pretty well( three title game losses, an eight and a sixteen in nine years) with basically a formula of a high volume guard three shooter in the 18 - 20 something scoring range and a post player in the ten to fifteen range another guard in the ten to fifteen range and the rest of the scoring split out
