Recruiting STRATEGY : THE CONSIDERING OWNER Topic

I saw in D1, there are a lot of owners who have the strategy of getting considering by a lot of RECRUITS. A particular owner I won't name had 3 schollies and was considered by 11... I saw some others to lesser extend, do the same.

Why would you do that unless you are sure to battle on every recruits?

I don't like that.  My guess is they're expecting battles but not willing to engage in them. They'll accept whatever players are left from their list.

I think, 9 times out of 10, that it's just a result of that coach throwing scouting visits at a bunch of marginal D1 players.  They get the info back and make their decisions, but just don't bother to shake off the ones they don't want.  D2 coaches who are comfortable playing the waiting game enjoy that sometimes.

If you watch my teams in DI, you will often see for the first cycle or two a bunch of guys considering us.  Some are high priority targets.  Some are just as described above - guys who consider us because of modest early effort.  I'll usually clean them out by sending a redshirt message by the 2nd or sometimes 3rd cycle.

I am then often surprised that they stay undecided for a long time - as if teams of lesser prestige stop looking at the recruiting universe after the first cycle.  liamanunts makes a good point about watching and waiting.

As a D1 , and in the past always at a mid-major, I too will go after both "reach" guys, and "marginal guys" heavy and early.  I have been guilty of the massive recruit lists as you describe and in years I knew cash would be tight in battles, I have not wasted the $10 to notify of redshirt which "normally" would get rid of the marginal.  I have put several requests or suggestions that a recruit can be notified of "no interest" without a charge.  That will not ever happen, so I suppose at my level of Rep/Prestige I will still need to over recruit!

I think somebody once called it the "flaming bag of poo" option.  When a guy will not stop considering you, you leave that on their doorstep.  It happens especially with internationals, where even a RS message wont get them off your list.

I've noticed the same thing this recruiting period at a certain D3 program or two in the world we're in, alblack. I don't understand the logic behind it, or how you get that many interested you at the D3 level, but there are plenty things I don't quite grasp it seems.
