what are the repercussions? Topic

the played signed right after I guarenteed him 15 minutes, as I had almost no money left.... anyone know the repercussions If i redshirt this guy before the season starts?  I would really love to redshirt this guy, should I?

Usually if you offer minutes, the player wont accept the redshirt willingly

If he takes the redshirt with a low we drop I would leave it.  As long as his we stayed obove 20 I would be cool with it.

Never done it, but I assume he would transfer.

ok  thanks, anyone else with experience doing this?

even if he takes the redshirt without a big WE drop, he will still complain about not getting the minutes you promised, and your rep will be hit and his WE will drop again I think...

Best solution (this actually works more often than you'd think):  Give him the 15 mpg this season.  Then redshirt him NEXT SEASON.  Typically that will work, unless he's a JUCO.  Of course, it doesn't always work and it's far from foolproof, but I have had it work twice in the past at DIII.  I haven't been in DIII in forever so I don't know if it's less likely to occur since some of the past updates, but I think it's still possible.

If you're planning on redshirting a kid though, never promise him minutes or a start.  It's just not worth redshirting him, because his WE typically takes a huge hit.  I'm not sure if he could transfer as a result, but it seems like a logical result.  I mean, in real life if you sign a kid and promise him minutes, then choose to redshirt him, he's obviously not going to be too happy with you.  But the rep hit would only occur if the player transferred, not simply due to a WE drop.

I am not 100% certain, but I believe there is a reputation penalty for breaking promises to recruits.

Hmm, there may be.  I was mixing up simply upsetting a sophomore/junior/senior for not giving him enough minutes with not adhering to a promise.  I think you are right about the reputation hit due to not fulfilling a promise.  I was just thinking that there is no reputation hit when it comes to a work ethic drop.  The hit would be due to not fulfilling a promise or causing a kid to transfer, the WE drop itself is never the cause of a reputation hit.  Those are the lines along which I was thinking.  Again, I believe you're correct about taking a rep hit if you do not fulfill a promise made to a recruit.

What about if you didn't promise him anything, but the season has started and he hasn't played yet? Will he take a WE hit or otherwise grumble?

Freshmen usually don't grumble about playing time if you didn't make any promises.  Sophomores, however, will complain almost every time.   I have a team right now with two whiners. Unfortunately, they play the same position, backup SF.

I increased the minutes of the first whiner and finally got a 'you're cool' message. Then the other player complained. So now I'm playing him and benching the first guy. So far, I've heard nothing from the first one.
