Tough first loss.. Topic

Really? How does my guy foul them with 3 seconds left while they're holding the ball and lose the game? Does the late fouling settings come into effect when it's tied?

00:34 Alan Smith makes the 3pt jumper from the left wing 73-73
Concordia (WI) is playing a triangle offense and a man to man (-3)   Pomona-Pitzer is playing a spread offense (hold ball) and a fullcourt press (+1)
00:03   73-73 Scott Rice is called for the reach on Aaron Coleman - foul #4 on Scott Rice, team foul #13
00:03   73-74 Aaron Coleman makes the 1st free throw
00:03   73-75 Aaron Coleman makes the 2nd free throw
00:03 Concordia (WI) calls a :30 timeout (5 full remaining) 73-75
Concordia (WI) is playing a quick shot offense (quick shot) and a man to man (-3)   Pomona-Pitzer is playing a spread offense (hold ball) and a fullcourt press (+1)

Well......they aren't going to just hold the ball and look for OT, so I'd say it's just a simple reach-in foul, no more no less.  Just happened at a horrible time for you, that's all.

And no, not when the game is tied they don't (the foul settings).

Didn't mention but this was already in double OT. Guy has B+ defensive IQ, just seems silly.

no, seems normal

he also has 37 defensive rating and Coleman has 76 athleticism.  what do you expect?

one has to understand that this game is all about probabilities.  Nothing is deterministic.  LeBron could be playing defense and I could have the ball and there would be some chance.....well infinitesimal....that he would foul me.

I dont think hold ball means standing holding the ball.  It has always looking to me like playing very slow, milking clock.  So the offense was doing that and randomly as the defense covered them a foul was committed.  And alas it decided the game.

In real life, sometimes the defense steps back and just lets the offense run out the clock - but not always.

So what if the guy was trying to get past him for a layup? Should he have just stood back, stayed hands off and let him hit it?

Three seasons ago in the national championship game with my Cal Tech team in Phelan I hit my first 3 pointer as a team for the season to tie the game with 7 seconds left, only to have a senior with A+ IQ athleticism in the 70s and Def around 60 commit a foul with 0:00 left on the clock.  Both free throws were made, I lost the national championship.  Lots of random stuff happens in sports, in this game and in real life.  I shouldn't have hit the 3, shouldn't have committed a foul with no time left.  It tends to balance out over time.

I imagine lots of alcohol was consumed in the 72 hours immediately following this "balancing out." ;)

Nothing unusual at all here. They hold the ball until the last 4-5 seconds (so if they miss you don't have time to score), and then try to score. You fouled them as they began the attempt to score but before a shooting action was made. This is what "should" happen 100% of the time in real life as well as in HD... not even close to unusual. What would be unusual would be holding the ball until time expired and making no attempt to do anything with it. Which actually happens in real life but not here...LOL.
If you were watching this game it would make complete sense.
Reading the PBP sometimes doesn't do justice to the logic of the play due to the brief explanation.

Thanks for the explanations, it makes sense. Game one and I actually tossed and turned all night over this lol. It's going to be a long season.

Guess who isn't starting next game...

piman, that same season in Phelan, my Menlo team lost our Final Four game in 3 OTs to the same team that beat you for the championship. That coach had some charm going for that run.
