How long did it take you to get good? Topic

How long do you say it took you to get to the level you are at now or whenever you became good/great/elite(or whatever term you would call yourself)

It would be interesting to see which coaches took awhile to get to where they were or who were quick learners and started to dominate early.

Personally I sucked when I first started a year ago, I got to become a good recruiter at the end of august and september for D3.  Think I took my recruiting to great in january, as well as having my best months as December and January but have since dropped down to good or above average recently.  I've also moved around a lot with about 3 major changes to my HD knowledge or goals, which hasn't really helped(sometimes I wish I could just start over)

At this point I'd say I'm above average for recruiting and coaching with at my previous "peak" great for recruiting and above average for coaching.

Some regrets I have:
Leaving NCWC in Phelan after my 1st season for D2 as I think those 4 guys I got were 4 of the best D3 prospects I've gotten and in the fb/press were a great fit(the coach that took over also recruited really well and made a final four 4 seasons later with my seniors)

As well as leaving Pace in Phelan after jumping ship from NCWC as that first D2 class was insane and it was a 6-6 super structure which I left after the soph/fresh season and went back to the USA South phelan.  That Sr/Jr season the sim coach went to the Sweet 16 with 17th best rpi and 34 sos.  Pretty good for a sim coach.

In tark jumping ship after 1 season at Montclair state which the next season a great coach took them to the final four and similarly in tark probably leaving West Texas after having a freak attack of thinking I was bad, when i just was going into a rebuild basically(I did leave and go to a title game the next season though so it worked out in the end I guess).

Havent made too many mistakes in Knight, I regret running triangle man the whole time(I really enjoy watching the triangle in real life so I adopted in when I started HD) I think it helped in the first few seasons, but after that it hurt me a lot with my weak coaching, but otherwise strong recruiting.

Haven't been in the 1 a days long enough to know my mistakes to the full intent yet, maybe leaving St. John's in Wooden was bad.

Just bored and interested more.

it took me a long time, 40 seasons in Iba,  to win a championship. I was competitive early on but couldn't get over that hump.

Yeah, I feel the same way.

I'd have to get good first. As long as I'm sitting on 0-6 in nt title games, I'm not there yet.

****. I would like to get to one NT title game before I die. That's my goal in life.

20-30 seasons or so to get good?  40-50 to win a championship.  I quote a_in_the_b because he gave me some very valuable insights along the way.

I played the game at the D3 level for a while and had some success, S16, final four.... but I took a step back, came back a couple years later and really jumped into it. My peak came when I won D3 titles in successive seasons in two different worlds, since than I have moved to many teams to D1 and I have thought about migrating some down. Getting to Louisville was a big moment since it is A- baseline, but I haven't been able to get them over the hump.

In my time in HD I've made every conceivable mistake, tried convoluted distro set-ups, avoided using FSS for quite awhile before I finally realized it's true value. I've made it as far as the final four a few times and won the PIT before but, in all honesty, I'm still learning. I'd say I'm a fair to midlands coach. One of these days I'll get over the hump, slip on a banana peel and fall into a title.

I got good pretty quickly.  I made the final four with my first recruiting class at Roanoke (my 3rd season overall, first two were trying to figure out what all the ratings meant).  I was also fairly successful in Knight (had a D2 player drafted, took a mid-major to the Sweet 16).  Those were my glory days.  Now, I suck.

Through my third season, I have one winning season, zero conference titles, zero NT bids, and 33 total wins. So, you know, tkimble and I are on the same path and stuff.
