I have come across a situation where I feel like I should know the answer to this, but I don't.

Somewhere this has probably been asked and answered before, but........

In HD, does the amount of points by which you win (or lose) have an impact on RPI? Not merely the fact of winning or losing, but the margin of victory or defeat itself?

no, point margin does not affect RPI

RPI is calculated by 25% your w/L + 50% your Opp w/L + 25% your Opp Opp w/L = RPI

So for example  Your W/L 12-12 = .500 so .5 * .25 = .125
Your Opp w/L 24-24 = .5 so .5 * .5 = .25
Your Opp OPP w/L 42-42 = .5 so .5 * .25 = .125
So the formula would be .125 + .25 + .125 = .500 Would be your RPI

bagger is correct.   We do receive , however, more value by winning on the road than at home

the results of the weighted home/road games with RPI (1.4 vs .6) can lead to surprising results.

a 9-1 record at home equates to  5.4 wins and 1.4 losses.  Or a 79% winning percentage
a 6-4 road record equals 8.4 wins and 2.4 losses.  Or a 78% winning percentage.
