In the old days of HBD you didn't receive comp picks if free agents were signed after the official free agency period. That's how I remember it but I was away for awhile.

I read elsewhere that you now receive compensation all the way up until the draft prospects are published.

Yes, it's true.

You probably still wouldn't be losing draft picks. He just won't be signed until the draft, rather than the end of Free Agency. People still don't want to give up the pick.
