I've got a centerpiece player, lefty, middle of the order bat, 93 overall, passable defensively at 2b. He wants 19.2M in arbitration or 3/31.5M. I've tried different combos to lock him up for 5 or 6 years (team option) with no luck. What would be a decent offer or do you think it's matter he won't go more than 3 years unless I offer a 4th as a player option?

You can only offer him five years.  The option is on the fifth year, not for an additional sixth year.

What have your offers been?  I believe if he's asking for 3/31.5, then your 4 and/or 5 year offers need to average at least 10.5 / season.

That was the hang up. I was offering five years at 10.5 or slightly more with a team option or 4 years with a team option. He accepted 5/52.5. Thank you for the insight.
