Proposal for recruited walk ones Topic

Ok so somthing I really wish we could have in this game is 2 extras slots for recruited walk ones. This would mean you could give guys that you wouldn't want as a scholarship player for your team for multiple years but you need to fill a need for one year without suffering a loss of reputation by cutting them. I also think that it would make the game more realistic because on a college basketball roster you have X number of scholarships (can't remember the number on the top of my head) and then they make a 10 deep bench by filling it with walk ons. 1 example I can think of walk ons I can think of is Virginia Tech (I am a huge Hokies fan), they had a series of coaching changes and that caused scholarship players to leave or get benched by the new coach, but walk ons stayed and made an impact at critical moments. I think this would come in handy when the guys contact you and tell them they want to play for you, normally these guys are terrible and you would never recruit them (I had one guy who was High in 9 catagories that I offered when I was starting that was an exception) but with recruited walk ones you could get players that might have a chance to contribute instead of the garbage ones that the sim gives you. I am not sure how this would work I'm thinking like an added recruiting option like offering a scholarship. Anyway offer your thoughts on what you think about it and what you would need to be done to make it work.

I think this is a promising idea.

Watch out for unforeseen effects

Like, an elite school grabs a kid in this category who a low DI team wanted desperately

One wrinkle would be that you could not fill these slots until say the last day of recruiting - so higher prestige schools would not be stockpiling guys who teams a notch or two down really wanted.

But in real life that is what happens, you don't think a walk on at duke could play on scholarship at Old Dominion? But if you wanted this to not make the game more realistic but to make it more competitive for all of D1 you could make the value of the preferred walk on offer mean a lot for a player without any offers but then decrease the value a lot if somebody gives him a scholarship offer

Oh another thought I had was to allow for recruited walk ones without any added roster slots. Just so you don't have to take some 280 guy thst is completely useless.

I think the simple thing to avoid problems would be that if the guy has any D1 offers he accepts that over the walk-on offer.

I do like this concept, and with the new "recruiting vision" improvements it would allow this to actually work.  We will only see people we recruit, and it is possible that just like in real life, some guys fall through the cracks.

Should have a miles or State limit though.  I cannot see a kid from France being an invited walk-on to Northwestern State!  It was hard enough to recruit big bucks and get them to come.

Another more subtle change would be a percentage of the kids that come to your recruiting camps, will go un-recruited.  Make the walk-on logic place walk-on's on a team from camp recruits that do not get scholarships anywhere

I like the idea of state limits, maybe you can only get somebody to be a walk on if they are in your state.

State is a bad idea - texas v rhode island

but mileage would be a good constraint

following up on comments above, I think this concept needs to consider reality but also game play.  Not good for this game to let elites stockpile even more elite and near elite players.

True, probably would make it only for people with out a scholarship offer to be a recruited walk on to keep it fair. And maybe everyone within 360 miles because that seems to be an important cutoff point for recruiting.

The problem is, even crappy Div-1 guys are studs for some Div-2 team out there with drop downs, etc.

Yeah I think any high school kid will take a full ride offer over walking on to a big-name school unless they are set financially.

I realize people would be afraid that Duke would steal a kid that UNC-Wilmington was recruiting hard.  But if the rule is that a kid will always choose a schollie over a walk-on spot, just the opposite would happen.  Duke would be talking to a kid about walking on and UNCW could swoop in at the last minute with a scholarship + promise and steal him away for $110.

Just to be clear, I fully support this happening -- watching a coach of the A+ baseline team get beat out for a kid by the coach of a D baseline prestige team would be very fun ... bring the popcorn.
