Who says great pitching duels cannot happen in the regular season. In our 1973 Theme League the New York Boogie Men sent Jack Billingham up against Spitball tossing Randy Jones. The Boogie men were riding an 8 game Win Streak and the Astros were 8-2 over their past 10 games.
Billingham takes a 1 hit shutout into the 9th while his boys had managed only 4 against Jones but had not threatened to score all game. In the bottom of the 9th, Billingham gives up two hits but holds the Astros at bay. To extra innings we go. Doyle Alexander has no problems in the 10th, and E. Rodriguez replaces Billingham who had walked no one and threw 96 pitches. Willie Davis greets him with a bloop double (the only extra base hit of the game), Mike Hegan grounds out to 3rd advancing Davis...with the infield in Dave Rader walks into one sending Bobby Murcer to deep RCF…it was a good catch and throw but Davis beats the throw home…1-0. The bat rack termites have to be removed.
